West Indies head into T20 World Cup on home soil with renewed hope

World No Tobacco Day tomorrow

DHAKA, May 30, 2024 (BSS) - World No Tobacco Day-2024 will be observed tomorrow in the country as elsewhere in the world with the theme 'Protecting children from tobacco industry interference'. The National Tobacco Control Cell (NTCC) at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has taken programmes like every year. President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today issued separate messages wishing all the programmes on the day a success. On the occasion, the President, in his message, said: "To keep children and teenagers away from all types of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco, campaigns against tobacco and tobacco products should be carried out in traditional media, online streaming platforms and social media." In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the World Health Organization (WHO) has formulated the 'Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) to reduce tobacco use.

56 animals found dead in Sundarbans in four days

The forest department officials have said that so far they have found 56 dead animals in the Sundarbans after the severe cyclone Remal that hit the forest on Sunday. Khulna Region Forest Conservator Mihir Kumar Doe said, “In the past four days, we have found the bodies of 56 wild animals - 54 deer and two boars.”The forest department recovered 15 dead bodies of deer and a boar from the Sundarbans in Bagerhat in the last two days, reports bdnews24.com. The bodies of 56 wild animals swept away by the tidal surge have been recovered so far. The tidal surge was above 10 feet.”“We believe the deer may have been washed away by the tidal surge when it reached the Sundarbans and were unable to swim back to shore. Rahela said normally a big size of lemon is sold at Taka 2 to Taka 3 and middle size lemon is sold at Taka 1.5 to Taka 2. But a big size lemon is being sold at Taka 10 to Taka 12 and a middle size lemon is sold at Taka 3 to Taka 4 adding that it has a great demand in the markets. Shamsuddin, a middle-aged primary school teacher of the village, said, "Now our village is known as Lemon Village."

A hotel boy killed after gas cylinder explosion in city

DHAKA, May 30, 2024 (BSS)- A pedestrian was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at ground floor of a three-story building in the city's Badda area this morning. The deceased was identified as Solaiman,36, a hotel boy hailed from Phulbariaupazila under Mymensingh district. After receiving the information, two firefighting units from Baridhara Fire Station rushed to the spot and recovered body of the victim. The primary investigation showed that the incident happened from the leakage gas cylinder blast on the ground floor of the building. But the it will be confirmed after the investigation, said the fire official.

It has predicted heat wave to severe heat wave conditions over northwest and central India will begin reducing gradually from today. India classifies a heat wave as a situation where the maximum temperature is 4.5 C to 6.4 C above normal, while a severe heat wave occurs when the maximum is higher than normal by 6.5 degrees or more.

Myanmar's ethnic armies consolidate strongholds as junta weakens, reports say

The street demonstrations, which were met with a brutal crackdown, morphed into an armed resistance movement that has combined with many of Myanmar's ethnic rebel armies to pose the most significant challenge to the military in decades. "The junta has abandoned significant territory and has been forced into a defensive posture in most parts of the country where it remains present." Operation 1027, a coordinated offensive last October led by three ethnic armies, marked a key moment that exposed a weakened military, which ceded swathes of borderlands in Myanmar's north. A series of offensives by ethnic armies since have pushed the junta out of peripheral areas all the way from the country's border with Thailand to coastal tracts along the Bay of Bengal.
