Pictures of Motiur and other members of his family with Ifat were uncovered. Motiur's first wife Laila was a former education cadre officer who left her government job and entered politics.

Dalai Lama arrives in US for knee surgery
NEW YORK, June 24, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama arrived Sunday in New York to undergo knee surgery, drawing a warm and festive welcome from thousands of followers. Followers, many wearing traditional Tibetan outfits, waited outside the Dalai Lama's Manhattan hotel in crushing heat hoping to catch a glimpse of the man. And everyone was, like, emotional because he's, like, our leader," said one of them, 18-year-old US born Tenzin Pasang, who has now seen the Dalai Lama three times. Last week a group of senior US lawmakers including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi met with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, sparking heavy criticism from China. Many exiled Tibetans fear Beijing will name a rival successor to the Dalai Lama, bolstering control over a land it poured troops into in 1950.

PM opens stipend, tuition fee disbursement among insolvent meritorious students
DHAKA, June 24, 2024 (BSS) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the stipend and tuition fee distribution among insolvent and meritorious students from secondary to graduate (pass) and its equivalent level. She opened the disbursement among the insolvent and meritorious students under the Prime Minister's Education Assistance Trust (PMEAT) at a programme held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium here. "I am very happy to disburse the money of stipends and tuition fees among the meritorious students through digital platform," she said. The premier also conferred the Bangabandhu Creative Talent Search award-2024 on 15 students and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Scholar Award, 2023 on 21 students. Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, PM's Education and Cultural Affairs Adviser Dr. Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, State Minister for Education Begum Shamsun Naher and Education Secretary Suleman Khan, spoke at the function.

As China’s funding on Teesta mega plan teeters, India weighs in
As part of the manoeuvre, a technical team will soon visit Bangladesh, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday. The Bangladesh government then undertook the 'Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project'. Amid India's interest, Prime Minister Hasina said in parliament on Jun 12 her government sought Chinese loan as it was working to implement the Teesta mega plan. Hasina added the government has taken initiatives to alleviate the hardships of the people living along the Teesta River in North Bengal. Bangladesh reiterated the urgency of concluding the Teesta water distribution treaty quickly."

New Chief of Army Staff takes charge
DHAKA, June 23, 2024 (BSS) - General Waker-Uz-Zaman took charge as the new Chief of Army Staff today. Afterwards, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman was adorned with the new rank badge of General in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban here. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan adorned the Army Chief with the rank badge of General. Earlier in the evening, the new Chief of Army Staff paid a courtesy call on President Mohammed Shahbuddin at Bangabhaban. The Ministry of Defence in a gazette notification on June 11 said Chief of General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman was promoted to general post and appointed as the Chief of Army Staff for three years effective from the afternoon of June 23.

Police administration undergoes major reshuffle
DHAKA, June 23, 2024 (BSS) – In a major reshuffle in the police administration, an Additional IGP, nine DIGs, 15 Additional DIGs and 15 SP ranking officials have been transferred to different positions. The Home Ministry issued three separate orders signed by Sirajam Munira, deputy secretary of the Public Security Division, to this end. According to an order, Additional Inspector General of Police (Addl-IGP) Krishna Pada Roy was transferred to the Police Headquarters while Deputy Inspector General (DIGP) Md Saiful Islam was made Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner. In another order, Md Masud Alam, SP, Madaripur, will replace Prolay Kumar Joardar, in Jashore, who was transferred as additional deputy inspector general of Police Headquarters. Besides, other DIGs, Addl-DIGs and SPs were transferred to different positions including Police Headquarters and metropolitan cities in the three orders.
