WASHINGTON, Nov 6, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Donald Trump's election victory puts a climate change denier back in the White House, poised to dismantle his predecessor's green policies and jeopardize global efforts to curb human-caused warming. Experts warn that a second Trump presidency would slam the brakes on the transition to green energy, crushing hopes of hitting crucial long-term climate targets. "The outcome of the American election will have ramifications for the whole planet," Leah Stokes, a political scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who specializes in climate, told AFP. - Rollbacks -Also in Trump's sights: the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden's signature climate law funneling hundreds of billions of dollars into tax credits and clean energy investments. She also expects that state and local governments, along with private sector initiatives, will continue advancing climate action, echoing the momentum seen during Trump's first term.

But I’m here to tell you that you can fall in love too. Courtesy of Wikimedia CommonsThe first time I fell in love I was eighteen, just about to start college and entirely unprepared. One second I was jumping from painting to painting and the next, I was laying on the riverbed of The Seine at Vétheuil. I fall in love with the way words twine around each other, how the sun glistens around the clouds just right and the occasional Monet. Because you never know when you’ll turn a corner and find the next love of your life.

Each fall, a new group of students arrives at my law school, filled with excitement, ambition and intelligence. When I first became a law professor, I thought the challenge lay in ensuring students learned as much as possible across many areas of law. Indeed, much of teaching first-year law students is opening a proverbial window and shooing out “A Few Good Men,” “Legally Blonde” and “My Cousin Vinny” (even though I admit to loving all three). One of the hardest lessons for students to grasp is that good lawyers don’t succeed by fixating on what the opposing side is wrong about. These were students who had grown up in a world of highly partisan news, increasing political extremism and zero-sum political activism.

Major stock markets around the world rallied following Trump's victory, and the dollar was set for its biggest one-day jump since 2020. Hispanics, traditionally Democratic voters, and lower-income households hit hardest by inflation helped fuel Trump's election victory. Trump's victory came as a relief for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has clashed with the Biden administration over the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon and on Wednesday called Trump's win "history's greatest comeback". HARRIS FALLS SHORTVice President Harris fell short in her 15-week sprint as a candidate, failing to galvanize enough support to defeat Trump, who occupied the White House from 2017-21, or to allay voters' concerns about the economy and immigration. Despite legal woes and controversies, Trump is only the second former president to win a second term after leaving the White House.
