Pakistan’s prime minister will hold an emergency security meeting on Friday with military and intelligence chiefs after trading deadly air strikes with Iran on militant targets this week. Iran carried out a missile and drone attack on what it called “terrorist” targets in Pakistan on Tuesday night, with Pakistan in turn striking militant targets inside Iran on Thursday. Pakistan has recalled its ambassador from Tehran and said Iran’s envoy — on a visit home — is blocked from returning to Islamabad. “The prime minister has summoned a meeting of the National Security Committee set to take place today,” a spokesperson in his office told AFP. An Islamabad security official said the Chief of Army Staff and head of the intelligence services will attend the mid-afternoon meeting.

Bangladesh’s exports of readymade garments to the European Union have decreased by 1.24 per cent to $11.36 billion year-on-year in the first half of 2023-24 fiscal year. Exporters say a fall in overall imports by the EU, especially Germany, has caused Bangladesh’s RMG exports to the region to drop. The biggest importer Germany bought $2.86 billion worth of Bangladeshi garments, 17 per cent less than the same period previous year. Our exports to the EU fell because of the fall in exports to Germany,” said Mohiuddin Rubel, a director of BGMEA. Bangladesh’s RMG exports to Canada also fell by 4.16 per cent to around $742 million in the July-December period.

In 2023, Bangladesh recorded 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths from the viral disease. In the latest daily count, hospitals in Dhaka admitted five more patients, while the other districts recorded 13 new cases. Of the 152 dengue patients undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country in the morning, 56 were in Dhaka and 96 outside the capital. Experts attribute the outbreak to a prolonged monsoon and rising temperature, along with a lack of effective measures to kill the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the known carrier of the virus.

A spell of sunny days is expected to soften winter's grip across Bangladesh after a week of biting cold accentuated by a shroud of dense fog. Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said that the sun was shining across the country, except in Rangpur, which remained engulfed in dense fog with no prospects of rain. While daytime temperatures might rise, night-time temperatures are expected to drop, slightly intensifying the winter chill. Over the past 24 hours, the country's highest temperature was recorded at 27 degrees Celsius in Cox's Bazar, and the lowest at 9.7 degrees Celsius in Tetulia. In Dhaka, the minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 15 degrees Celsius and 23.1 degrees Celcius.

India's Akasa Air said on Thursday it has ordered 150 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody planes, showcasing its confidence in the troubled planemaker as the budget carrier seeks to fly to more destinations at home and abroad. This is the first major order announcement for Boeing's MAX jetliner programme since a mid-air cabin panel blowout in the United States early this month, although Akasa's order does not include the 737 Max 9 version which is in the spotlight after the incident. The order was announced at the "Wings India" air show in the southern city of Hyderabad, which has attracted planemakers, airlines and government officials as they make the most of India's travel boom, with a greater focus on international routes. "We feel very confident about the aircraft type that we have ... even seeing Boeing's commitment to the way they've handled this problem," Priya Mehra, Akasa's chief legal, regulatory and strategic relations officer, told Reuters.
