DHAKA, Jan 15, 2024 (BSS) - Newly appointed Education Minister Mohibul HassanChowdhoury today suggested enhancing capacity of the newly establisheduniversities by emphasizing constructing infrastructures, introducinglaboratory facilities and appointing skilled manpower. He gave the suggestion when a five-member delegation of University GrantsCommission (UGC) led by its chairman Professor Muhammad Alamgir paid acourtesy call on the new minister at his Secretariat office here. UGC members Professor Md Sajjad Hossain, Professor Bishwajit Chanda andProfessor Hasina Khan, its secretary Dr Ferdous Jaman were in the delegation. Mohibul Hassan suggested setting up new departments on the basis of thedemand of time and reality. He urged the UGC to take up effective measures for ensuring quality educationand research in the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has blamed ‘a conspiracy by some quarters’ for price rises, and said the government will take sufficient steps to control inflation. At the ruling Awami League’s first meeting after its election victory, Hasina on Monday said people are suffering the most because of price rises. “Some quarters conspire to raise inflation. But, it’s also true that people’s purchasing power has also increased,” she said. Hasina mentioned the government’s measures to control inflation and ease people’s sufferings, such as distributing daily necessities among the low-income people at subsidised prices.

DHAKA, Jan 15, 2024 (BSS) - Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh PranayVerma today said that New Delhi eyes on gaining a "greater momentum" in theexisting excellent India-Bangladesh bilateral ties as the Awami Leaguegovernment resumed office after its reelection. The envoy termed his maiden meeting with the new Bangladesh foreign ministeras "very good" and said he looks forward to closer cooperation with theforeign ministry in the coming days. It was Mahmud's first ever meeting with any foreign envoy after assumingoffice as the Foreign Minister. Earlier, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar congratulated DrHasan Mahmud on his appointment as Foreign Minister of Bangladesh. During today's meeting, the Indian High Commissioner also invited the foreignminister to visit New Delhi, foreign office sources said.

DHAKA, Jan 15, 2024 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today ordered to investigatethe death of five-year old Ayaan Ahmed following a circumcision at UnitedMedical College Hospital in Satarkul area of the capital. The court also issued a rule, asking authorities concerned to explain as towhy it shall not pass an order to provide Ayaan's family Taka five crore incompensation. A High Court division bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice MdAtabullah passed the order after holding hearing on a writ petition filed inthis regard. The court in its order asked Director General (DG) of Directorate General ofHealth Services (DGHS) to conduct the probe and submit its report withinseven days. It also ordered DGHS to submit a report within one month on theunauthorised hospitals and clinics across the country.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has attended the party’s first joint meeting since it won a fourth consecutive term in power in the general election. She led the meeting at the party’s central offices in Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Avenue on Monday. Before the start of the meeting, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader presented flowers to the newly-elected prime minister. Members of the Awami League Presidium, its Advisory Council, and the presidents and general secretaries of the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South branches as well as all associate and fraternal organisations were in attendance at the meeting, according to the party’s Office Secretary Biplab Barua.

A Qatar Airways plane headed to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport made an emergency landing in Dhaka as dense fog disrupted the flight’s operation. The flight set off for Kolkata again three hours after the landing as weather conditions improved, said Group Captain Kamrul Islam, executive director at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. “The Qatar Airways plane was diverted to Dhaka airport due to the dense fog in Kolkata and landed in Dhaka around 3:24 am. It set off for Kolkata again around 6:32 am on Monday.”Earlier on Saturday, another Guwahati-bound IndiGo Airline plane from Mumbai made an emergency landing at Dhaka airport due to fog.

The United Medical College authorities could not provide documents on registration or licence for the hospital in an under-construction building, according to the order. Online records show the medical college never applied for the licence, the directorate said. Ayan was subsequently transferred to United Hospital in Gulshan and placed on life support. The case implicated United Medical College Hospital's anesthesiologist Syed Sabbir Ahmed, surgeon Tasnuva Mahjabin, an anonymous director and other unidentified employees of the medical college hospital and United Hospital. Shamim alleged the medical college hospital applied full anaesthesia without the family’s permission while United Hospital barred them from taking Ayan to another hospital.

BEIJING, Jan 15, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - The former chairman of state-owned Chinese banking giant Everbright Group has been arrested on suspicion of corruption and bribery, prosecutors said on Monday. Beijing's Supreme People's Procuratorate said an initial investigation into ex-boss Tang Shuangning had concluded and that he was arrested "in recent days".
