Dear Eric: I have two brothers that have recently failed to send a birthday gift or even a card to my 12-year-old daughter. My wife and I on the other hand always send birthday gifts or money and a card to their kids, our nieces and nephews. One of my brothers just sent a request for a video game birthday gift to his 9-year-old son. I am happy to give a gift to my nephew but also a bit annoyed that this is not reciprocated. The niece/nephew gift exchange need not be tit for tat, but it’s important that your brothers know that you’re not feeling the kind of family connection that you want.

NEW YORK, Nov 21, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Billionaire Indian industrialist Gautam Adani has been charged with paying hundreds of millions of dollars of bribes and hiding the payments from investors, US prosecutors said on Wednesday. With a business empire spanning coal, airports, cement and media, the chairman of Adani Group has been rocked in recent years by corporate fraud allegations and a stock crash. None of the multiple defendants in the case, including Adani, are in custody, the prosecutor's office told AFP. A self-described introvert, Adani keeps a low profile and rarely speaks to the media, often sending lieutenants to front corporate events. His big break came seven years later with a contract to build and operate a commercial shipping port in Gujarat.

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Nov 21, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - The European Parliament's main political groups struck a deal Wednesday to greenlight the EU's new executive team -- including a controversial hard-right commissioner -- after a week-long standoff threatened to derail the process. Leaders of the centre-right European People's Party, the centre-left Socialists and Democrats and centrist Renew agreed to back Ursula von der Leyen's new European Commission, clearing the way for a parliament confirmation vote next week and a December start. Senior lawmakers gave the go-ahead following late-night talks in Brussels to the seven commission members whose approval was still pending -- including all six of its vice-presidents, the political groups involved confirmed. Centre and left groups were unhappy that Raffaele Fitto of Italy's hard-right Brothers of Italy party was handed a vice presidency despite his political affiliation. Each of the EU's 27 states gets to nominate one member to serve on the commission, the EU's top executive body and one of the world's most formidable regulators.

On a more recent Thursday night in 2024, up-and-coming student artists took to the stage at the Electric Buffalo Records “70s Night” open mic. As an entirely student-run record label and performance venue under the umbrella of Cornell Media Guild, Electric Buffalo Records (EBR) is a creative hub for all student musicians. Many of the members are part of other musical organizations around campus, but they banded together a few weeks before the open mic to solidify a set list and seize the performance opportunity. (Photo courtesy of Eve Riskind)Playing an open mic night is certainly a contrast to performing at Slope Day. The EBR performance space is the “Vinyl Room” of the WVBR-FM headquarters, a house-turned-radio station on the corner of Buffalo St. and Stewart Ave.
