The BNP has criticised Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy's "unsolicited" statement about the recent general election in the country, saying it 'hurt the nation's feelings'. "We have noticed the Russian ambassador's comments about the BNP's statement on Russia's role in the election, which he labelled as 'false and misleading'," BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Friday. "He also claimed that people of Bangladesh chose their government, with the majority of the 41.8 percent voters who turned out on election day casting their ballots in favour of the Awami League."

As the BNP carries out assessments of its tactics and why its moves failed, supporters and activists are questioning when their protest movement will end. Since then, several senior leaders have described the decision to boycott the 10th parliamentary polls in 2014 as a ‘big mistake’. BNP Vice Chairman M Hafizuddin Ahmed openly advised the BNP to take part in the election this time. Another leader, Vice Chairman Shahjahan Omar, resigned from the BNP and joined the Awami League to run in the election. But the BNP remains adamant about not participating in the elections as long as the Awami League is in power.

A merit-based system built on unrectified discrimination would lead to the permanent disadvantage of those who were placed behind by policy. I remember last year when debating affirmative action, I was asked how it feels not knowing whether you got into Cornell due to your own efforts or affirmative action. The idea of the meritocracy is a myth, a useful myth but a myth nonetheless. Showing that the problem may not be the disruption of the meritocratic system itself but those who benefit from the disruption of the myth. BNP leader Mirza Abbas has been shown arrested in nine cases filed against him with the Paltan and Ramna Model police stations, reports bdnews24.com. On Jan 24, Abbas's legal counsel Mohiuddin Chowdhury applied for the BNP leader to be shown arrested in the nine cases in order to apply for his bail. "He was sent to jail on November 1 in one of the cases and was shown arrested in another. We couldn't proceed with his bail plea as the state did not show him arrested in the other nine cases. Hence, we applied for him to be shown arrested in those cases," said Mohiuddin.

The Bangladesh Bank has raised the benchmark interest rate for bank loans by 54 basis points, the biggest increase in seven months, reports bdnews24.com. This means customers could be charged a maximum of 12.43 per cent interest on loans, up from 11.89 per cent last month. Previously, the biggest one-month surge in the SMART rate was 42 basis points, reaching 8.14 per cent in December. The uptick follows an increase in the key policy rate, known as the repo rate, by 25 basis points to 6 per cent in a bid to contain inflation. The central bank introduced the SMART rate in July 2023 to modernise monetary policy, curb inflation, and transition to a market-based interest rate system in line with the conditions set by the IMF.

It is precisely the advent of mobile technology that threatens a free society through its corruption of social groups and meaningful societal organizations. Social groups are incredibly important to implementation of social movements and the development of society as a whole. I come full circle in my writing to emphasize the importance of society and social groups rather than the individual. So the matter of human development, group formation and building relationships oddly reverts back to individualism, only in the right direction. You get what’s happening here: I went through a breakup; I watch a lot of movies; now, I’m looking back and attempting to confer upon them some sort of rhyme and reason to distinguish the ones that helped from the ones that hurt and all that jazz. Movies are a super cool window into universal experience, and there’s a lot that they can do in helping you take steps towards feeling better. But even the most hardcore cinephile will tell you that there are limits to the healing powers of movies. Post-breakup, recalculating the tradeoff between stable happiness and anxious excitement can be a difficult task, so see if one of the above movies can give you something of an answer. Those movies can still represent you — you just have to find a way to figure out how they’re going to do that now.
