The High Court has raised questions about the legality of the death penalty in the absence of a clear policy framework in light of Bangladesh's commitments under international law. The rule was issued in response to a writ petition filed on Dec 7, questioning the constitutional validity of the death penalty. Advocate Ishrat Hassan brought the writ petition before the court, while Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy and Assistant Attorney General Salim Azad represented the state. Ishrat cited the abolition of the death penalty in 112 countries and argued that it be declared unconstitutional in Bangladesh. The writ petition further contends that the provisions for capital punishment under Bangladesh's Penal Code contradict Articles 32 and 35 of the country's Constitution.

In an era of widespread grade inflation and soaring tuition, universities face a critical question: Are they institutions of learning or mere diploma mills? In the late 1990s, Cornell began a two-pronged experiment to counteract the detrimental effects of grade inflation on learning. While compositional grade inflation may undermine the credibility of every Cornell student’s raw GPA, including median course grades on the registrar’s website ensures that this impact is distributed equally among all students. Thus, while Cornell combats grade inflation through more effective strategies, the unfair advantages of grade inflation are minimized by grade transparency. The context-setting median grade decreases the risk to students of enrolling in challenging low-median courses, by tempering the harm caused by a lower grade.

Bangladesh has slipped two places down to 149th out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index after registering its lowest ever rating score in 2023. The South Asian nation's score fell from 25 in 2022 to 24 in 2023, which means the public sector is perceived to be more corrupt than it was a year ago. Transparency International Bangladesh's Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman elaborated on the findings and discussed the current state of corruption in the country at a media briefing on Tuesday. Among South Asian nations, only Afghanistan fared worse with a rating of 20, while Pakistan scored 29, Nepal scored 35, Sri Lanka scored 34, and India 39, according to the index released by the Berlin-based organisation.

Many dismissed Emerald Fennell’s second film Saltburn as being “boring” and “empty.” My response to these comments: If this was your take on Saltburn, I don’t think you were paying close enough attention. Saltburn is filled with precise details, many of which I didn’t even appreciate until I had watched the movie a second time. To Oliver, Felix represents the highest echelon of the British upper class, and serves as a source of intrigue and desire. The patriarch of the Catton family seems and looks aloof, with his hair constantly alive and upright. In one pivotal moment involving a visit to Oliver’s family, Oliver’s deceit is laid bare.

As many as 68 students have been infected with jaundice over the span of 11 days at Rajshahi University (RU), reports bdnews24.com. The average rate of infection at the university stood at 46 per cent in the span of 11 days, according to the data from the medical centre. Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes that occurs when the body does not process bilirubin as it should. However, Habibur advised students to take sufficient rest, drink pure water and eat healthy food following the doctor's suggestions, instead of panicking over the spread of the disease. "The number of patients infected with the disease has increased comparatively over the last month," he added.
