The state has moved to appeal the High Court’s decision to ban battery-powered rickshaws from the Dhaka metropolitan area. The home secretary, local government secretary, police chief, DMP commissioner, and the authorities of the two Dhaka city corporations were instructed to implement the decision. The rickshaw drivers took to the streets in Dayaganj the following day to demand the ban be withdrawn. Although these rickshaws have been widely used in rural and urban areas, their increasing numbers in Dhaka have caused more problems, including traffic congestion. Earlier this year, during the Awami League government's tenure, an initiative to ban battery-powered rickshaws was introduced but was later dropped due to resistance from drivers.

Thanksgiving is the one time each year when Americans and others come together with family and friends to enjoy each other and be thankful for all that we have. Time will tell, but at least Americans know there is some sense and sensibility within the hallowed halls of the U.S.Senate. And speaking of antisemites, I was so thankful to see the last vestiges of Pat McCarran removed from the airport as the name of Sen. Harry Reid literally lit up the landscape at the entrance to the Harry Reid International Airport. This was a long overdue defeat of evil by the good people of Southern Nevada who made the decision. And every tourist and every resident going into and out of Reid International Airport, if they ask, will understand the difference.

REUTERSLebanon's Hezbollah movement fired heavy rocket barrages at Israel on Sunday, and the Israeli military said houses had been destroyed or set alight near Tel Aviv, after a powerful Israeli airstrike killed at least 29 people in Beirut the day before. Hezbollah, which has previously vowed to respond to attacks on Beirut by targeting Tel Aviv, said it had launched precision missiles at two military sites in Tel Aviv and nearby. Israel's military said Hezbollah had fired 250 rockets at Israel, of which many were intercepted, with sirens sounding across most of the country. On Sunday, the Israeli military said it carried out strikes against 12 Hezbollah command centers in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh. The Israeli military said it regretted the incident and was investigating, and that it was fighting against Hezbollah, not the Lebanese Army.

Buffalo Street Books welcomed back two Cornell alumni Friday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. to host a book discussion of “Rooms: The Work and Life of JJ Manford” by Gordon Sander ’72 B. Arch. Sander — a writer, photographer and teacher currently residing in Riga, Latvia — led the event alongside the subject of his biography, Jonathan “JJ” Manford ’06, a painter practicing out of Brooklyn. Sander said he came back to the University in 2002 as the “prodigal son returneth,” becoming an artist-in-residence at Risley Residential College. Sander said he likes to think he influenced Manford’s work through his mentorship, although he does not want to take credit for his work. “I think Gordon always had a vision of a homecoming of sorts, or at least doing something at Cornell or in Ithaca, because it’s so pivotal to the book,” Manford said.

Men’s soccer (13-3-2, 5-2 Ivy) started its NCAA Tournament run with a comeback win over visitors Fordham (8-6-5, 4-1-3 Atlantic 10). Despite Fordham coming out to a 2-0 lead, the Red scored four straight to win the game and move on. Early on, Cornell dominated the game, with Fordham struggling to get out of its half and resist the pressure from Cornell. Lokko sent a ball across to sophomore forward Alex Harris, who softly placed a left-footed shot past the Fordham goalkeeper. The 4-2 win marked Cornell’s first NCAA Tournament win since Nov. 20, 2022 when the Red earned a bye and won its second round fixture against the University of Maryland, 2-1, in even colder conditions.
