Men’s hockey (12-4-4, 7-4-2 ECAC) got right back on track on Friday night, as a solid defensive performance lifted Cornell over upstate-New York rival St. Lawrence (8-14-3, 6-6-1 ECAC). Aided by a momentum-boosting penalty kill, St. Lawrence went right back the other way. A loud ringing began the second period as St. Lawrence fired a shot off the pipe after the opening faceoff, but the second period saw fewer offensive chances on both sides. A late St. Lawrence power play saw the Saints generate its best looks of the game since the opening minutes. St. Lawrence finished the game with 13 shots, with Shane stopping all but one of them.

Bangladesh have lost the chance to qualify for the semi-finals of the U-19 World Cup with a five-run defeat to Pakistan in a Super Six thriller in South Africa. The young Tigers were all out for 150 in the chase of 156 for a win, thanks to a five-wicket haul by Ubaid Shah at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday. Maruf Mridha (4), the last of the tailenders, revived the hopes for a semis berth with a 23-run stand with Rohanat Daulah Borson (21), but could not survive extra bounce off Mohammad Zeeshan.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board or BCB has not kept a single match of Sri Lanka Men’s full tour in Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium because the women’s team will play against their Australian counterparts in March. “The Australian women’s cricket team will arrive in Bangladesh in mid-March. Back when the Niners were training pre-season at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, I would ride my bike over there to watch them scrimmage. This was 1956 or so, and at 12 years old I quickly got to know their names by their faces…what fun! One bright St. Mary’s morning our center, Frank Morze, knocked a contact lens right out of the eye of linebacker Matt Hazeltine. Knowing exactly where it happened, I found it, and Matt Hazeltine insisted I join the team for lunch there at the college. Frank took me right to my front door while I rattled off the names of his teammates from those days so long ago.

A group of citizens have demonstrated in Tangail against the Geographical Indication tag of handloom sarees native to this central region of Bangladesh, but claimed by India. The demonstrators wielding placards demanded urgent government intervention to secure the GI status for Tangail sarees, a matter of national cultural heritage. The controversy ignited when the Indian Ministry of Culture, in a Facebook post on Thursday, asserted that the Tangail saree originated from West Bengal, a claim that contradicts the saree's deep-rooted association with Bangladesh. This assertion came after Nadia, a district in West Bengal, was awarded the GI tag a month earlier for this textile, traditionally known for its distinctive weave and design, attributed to Bangladesh. The World Intellectual Property Organization defines Geographical Indications as markers on goods indicating a specific geographical origin, signifying qualities, reputation, or characteristics inherent to that locale.

Some people end up shutting those movies out, excluding them from any potential watchlist for the obscene commitment they ask of audiences. Earlier this month, I made that bucket list a whole lot shorter, watching a dozen or so of these ultralong “project” movies over break. To start, what quantifies an ultra-long film? When it comes to those long, deliberately boring films, there’s a reason they aren’t more widely lauded. Baked into every long film there’s a sense of fullness and importance that can turn into a sense of accomplishment when finished (like getting to the last page of a novel).
