Bangladesh struggles to arrange gas supply for new gas-fired power plants Azizur RahmanBangladesh is struggling to arrange sufficient gas supply for half a dozen new gas-fired power plants with total generation capacity of around 3,510 MW due to heavy government subsidies and slow-moving reforms, according to project operators and market participants. The power plants that have completed construction are – Unique Meghnaghat Power’s 584-MW plant, the 583-MW Summit Meghnaghat-II and the 718-MW power plant jointly owned by India’s Reliance Power and Japan’s JERA. The three public sector gas-fired power plants nearing completion are the 800-MW Rupsha combined cycle power plant, 416-MW Ghorashal Repowering Unit 3 and 409-MW Ghorashal Repowering Unit 4. Khan said there is already intense competition among existing plants for Petrobangla’s gas but it has agreed to supply gas to the new power plants upon availability. “The power plant owners inked deals and constructed the power plants knowing all the conditions in Bangladesh,” Mohammad Hossain, director general of the government’s power cell, said.

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Somali pirates who hijacked the ship MV Abdullah have threatened to start killing the Bangladeshi sailors held hostage unless they are paid a ransom. In a message sent to his wife, the vessel's Chief Officer Atiq Ullah Khan said, "Pass on this message to everyone because they are taking away our mobiles. The final word is that, if they are not paid the money, they will start killing us one by one." In an audio message sent by Chief Engineer Saiduzzaman to the ship's owners, he said, "Sir, they are seizing our mobiles. If you can keep the internet service on our ship open, then we can try and message you if a situation arises."

A Statement on the Coulter Invitation - The Cornell Daily Sun
I am writing to set the record straight with respect to the invitation to Ann Coulter ’84 to speak on campus. Having been deeply troubled by an invited speaker at Cornell (any speaker) being shouted down and unable to present their views, I agreed that there could be few more powerful demonstrations of Cornell’s commitment to free expression than to have Ms. Coulter return to campus and present her views. Shielding students or others in our community from viewpoints with which they disagree, or filtering campus speakers based on the content of their presentation, undermines the fundamental role of a university. To that end, I have worked with the Federalist Society at Cornell, the Cornell Political Union, the Heterodox Academy Campus Community at Cornell and other Cornell organizations to sponsor such a presentation. It is my hope and expectation that Ms. Coulter will deliver her remarks in full and will be met with civility and respect from the Cornell audience.

The CNG stations will remain closed from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm. On the occasion of Eid, the CNG stations will be opened 24 hours from 7th April to 18th April 2024.”Nasrul Hamid said the CNG stations will be opened and closed as before after the Eid. Senior secretary of the power division Md Habibur Rahman, energy division secretary Md Nurul Alam, Petrobangla Chairman Zanendranath Sarkar and PDB Chairman Md Mahabubur Rahman were present in the meeting, among others.

Eminent singer Sadi Mohammad dies by apparent suicide
Renowned Rabindra Sangeet singer Sadi Mohammad’s hanging body has been found in the music room of his house. The police suspect that the artist chose to die by suicide, reports bdnews24.com. Sadi's brother, Shibli Mohammad, told bdnews24.com that his brother died at their Mohammadpur residence sometime after 7:00 pm on Wednesday. Inspector Tofazzal Hosen of the Mohammadpur Police Station said, "The hanging body of Sadi Mohammad was found in the room where he used to sing at his home. 35 injured in Gazipur Kaliakair’s gas cylinder explosion
GAZIPUR, March 13, 2024 (BSS) - At least 35 people, including women and children, were injured in a gas cylinder explosion in Gazipur's Kaliakair today. They were Md Akash, Md Kuti, Md Ariful, Maidul Islam, Yasin, Soleiman, Noor Nabi, Moshammat Shilpi, Mohammad Naeem and Nirab. A cooking gas cylinder exploded at a colony next to Top Star Garment Factory around 6:00pm today, said Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin. Locals said a cooking gas cylinder started leaking at a house in the colony. The resident brought the cylinder to the main door and threw it out on the road, leading to the explosion.

35 suffer burn injuries as gas cylinder blasts in Gazipur
At least 35 people, including women and children, sustained burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded in Gazipur's Kaliakair on Wednesday. They were treated at several wards at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with burn injuries, said Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen. Five people, including children, have been kept in the ICU and four in the High Defense Unit (HDU), Dr Sen added. Locals said a fire broke out in a cooking gas cylinder at a house in Telir Chala area of Mouchak in Kaliakair Upazila of the district around 6:00 pm. Later, they were shifted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
