Bangladesh set prices of dates for Ramadan
The government has set date prices for the month of Ramadan to keep the imported fruit within the reach of low-income people. The price of the lesser quality dates has been fixed at Tk 150-165 per kg, and the most sold Jaydi variety at Tk 170-180. The commerce ministry informed the Bangladesh Fresh Fruit Importers Association and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries about the prices on Monday. It said in letters to the trade associations that the ministry analysed the import price, duty, taxes and other costs to set the prices.

The government has fixed the price of low grade dates at Tk 150 to Tk 165 per kilogramme (KG), as per a notification of the Commerce Ministry. Prices of Zahidi dates, the widely-consumed variety, would be Tk 170-Tk 180 per KG. In the early February, the National Board of Revenue slashed the import duty on dates to 15 percent from 25 percent in order to encourage traders to cut the price and enable consumers to buy the food item at low rates.

Two found dead in suspected murder-suicide in Dhaka
A man and a woman were found dead in an apparent case of murder-suicide in Dhaka. Police believe the woman, 36-year-old Moushumi Begum, was murdered by 33-year-old Md Ibrahim, who then hung himself, as per bdnews24.com reports. Moushumi frequently visited Ibrahim's house. When her two children were unable to locate their mother, they decided to search for her at Ibrahim's house on Monday evening. Police officers later broke the door down and entered the flat, only to find Moushumi and Ibrahim dead.

KSRM ship captured by pirates, 23 seamen taken hostage
The ship MV Abdullah is owned by SR Shipping, a concern of reputed business group of the country KSRM Group. The other seamen are Chief Officer Mohammad Atik Ullah Khan, Second Officer Mazharul Islam Chowdhury, Third Officer Md. Tarekul Islam, Chief Engineer ASM Saiduzzaman, Second Engineer Md. The ship MV Abdullah was built in 2016. The ship, first named 'Golden Hawk', was renamed MV Abdullah after the change of ownership.

Two die as bike bought ‘under threat of suicide’ crashes
A Rajbari teen threatened to ‘commit suicide’ if his family did not buy him a motorcycle. Three days later, he and his friend were killed in an accident involving that same bike. “A few days before they bought the motorcycle for him, he went to commit suicide.”“The family was forced to buy the motorcycle three days ago. And now he has died in a motorcycle accident.”“Both of [the victims] were killed on the spot,” said OC Iftekharur. “Police recovered their bodies after the incident was reported.”It is initially believed the accident was due to speeding, the OC said.

Govt to stop manufacturing of current fishing nets: Minister
DHAKA, Mar 11, 2024 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Minister M Abdur Rahman today said the government will take initiative to restrict manufacture of all illegal fishing nets including monofilament fishing net or current net aiming to increase fisheries output in the natural fisheries habitats across the country. "Those who are using contraband fishing nets including the monofilament or current fishing nets for catching fish fries including Jatka are the enemies of the society as well as the nation...strict action would be taken to this end", he said. The minister came up with this remark while inaugurating Jatka conservation week-2024 at Molehead of Sadar Upazila in Chandpur. "We are all responsible to protect the fisheries resources of the country ...nonetheless few people are being engaged in collecting Jatka illegally, he said, adding, "None will be spared for involve with catching Jatka illegally, even whatever their identities." Terming those who are being involved with catching fish fries including Jatka as the enemy of the society and the nation, the fisheries minister said those who are catching fish fries by using illegal fishing nets would not be spared and strict steps will be taken in this regard.
