Journalists, people from other professions pay tribute to Ihsanul Karim
Media workers and people from many other professions have paid homage to veteran journalist Ihsanul Karim, long-time press secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who died in hospital care in Dhaka after a long battle with illness. The freedom fighter was also given a guard of honour after his funeral prayers at the press club. Maj Gen Kabir Ahmed paid tribute to Ihsanul on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after his Namaz-e-Janaza at the press club. Afterwards, tributes were paid from the PM’s office, press wing, Awami League, Dhaka South City Corporation, National Press Club, Dhaka Reporters Unity, the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and the Dhaka Union of Journalists. Before joining the Prime Minister’s Office, Ihsanul worked as the president’s press secretary, and managing director and chief editor of BSS.

No. 6 Women’s Hockey Falls to No. 4 Colgate in ECAC Semifinals
The Raiders (31-6-1, 18-4-0 ECAC) went on to win the ECAC tournament the next day by defeating Clarkson 3-0. The first game of ECAC Championship Weekend began in front of 1135 fans at the Class of 1967 Arena in Hamilton, NY. It was the NCAA-leading 44th power play goal for Colgate. Though Colgate had dominated for much of the game, Cornell had tied the score and seized the game’s momentum. A tie game with 13:57 left in the third quickly turned into a 5-1 Colgate blowout crushing the Red’s ECAC championship hopes.

Name of Shakib’s sister comes up in India betting app case
The name of Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan's sister has cropped up in an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate of India in connection with the Mahadev online betting app case. Both Shakib and Bangladesh Cricket Board, however, have declined to comment on the matter. According to the Enforcement Directorate, Suraj Chokhani used to invest Tribewal's money in stocks of listed companies. Besides this, Chokhani invested in an app in Bangladesh, in which one of his partners is ‘Janatul Hasan’, sister of star cricketer Shakib, according to the report. He added they were not working on the betting app or Shakib’s sister.

Titu becomes M'singh mayor for second time
MYMENSINGH, March 10 (UNB): Ekramul Haque Titu has been unofficially declared winner in the Mymensingh City Corporation election held on Saturday. With this, Titu has once again become the mayor of the Mymensingh city corporation. Titu, former mayor of the city corporation, bagged 1,39,604 votes while his nearest rival Advocate Sadequl Haque Khan Milky got 35,763 votes. But for the first time, she left a polling centre without casting her vote. Layli's inability to vote in the Mymensingh city election was due to a mismatch of her fingerprint with the electronic voting machine, leaving her deeply disappointed.

DHAKA, March 10, 2024 (BSS) - State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Simeen Hussain Rimi today said the government is playing a pioneering role to flourish women leadership in the country as it increased budgetary allocation for that. She was addressing a seminar on "Action Aid Event for the Celebration of International Women Day" organized by Action Aid Bangladesh at Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in the capital. Noting that half of the country's total population is women, Simeen Hussain said sustainable development cannot be possible keeping the women behind. She said today's investment behind women will yield manifold result in future. She said training is being provided to women at community level to make them self-reliant.

How big is the fall in fuel oil prices? Who will benefit?
The government has announced a reduction in diesel and kerosene prices by Tk 1.48 per litre, although consumers will see a price decrease of only Tk 0.75 per litre. Octane price has been cut by Tk 4.58, but the customers will enjoy a Tk 4 decline. After Value Added Tax and other taxes, petrol is Tk 3.63 cheaper, yet the benefit to consumers is a decrease of Tk 3. But before the new rates took effect on Friday, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid had hinted at “big changes” to fuel oil prices through automatic readjustment with the international market. Titu, the driver of a small passenger vehicle called Laguna who gave a single name, said they were waiting for a long time for a drop in fuel oil prices.

Nebraska baseball shakes off rough start to defeat South Alabama
Reliever Tucker Timmerman doused a potential Jags uprising in the seventh inning and finished the game in another scoreless appearance. The sophomore right-hander earned the win to help Nebraska (9-4) to its best 13-game start since the 2021 Big Ten title team. Just like Friday, South Alabama led 4-0 before making an out with Lucas Ismalli whacking a wind-aided three-run shot to left for the capper. The Nebraska defense didn’t help freshman Ty Horn settle in for his first collegiate start. Nebraska batters totaled 10 two-out runs in all while matching a season low in strikeouts (four).

Penalty heroics from Yearzan see Bangladesh Women beat India to win SAFF U-16 Championship
But Bangladesh levelled things in the second half. At the end of 90 minutes, they were tied at 1-1. Bangladesh’s start to the tiebreaker was not promising. But, after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, they will be taking home the 2024 SAFF U-16 Women’s Championship. The difference maker was goalkeeper Yearzan Begum, who saved three penalties to give Bangladesh a 3-2 win in the shootout.

Arafat mourns death of PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim
DHAKA, March 10, 2024 (BSS) - State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Prime Minister's Press Secretary, prominent journalist and 1971 Liberation War veteran Ihsanul Karim Helal. He prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Ihsanul Karim, former Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), breathed his last around 8.00 pm today at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) where he was under life-support with multiple-organ complications.

Ihsanul Karim, Press Secretary to Prime Minister Hasina, is dead at 73
He breathed his last at 8:10pm on Sunday at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital, according to his family. The family said funeral prayers will be held at the National Press Club at 11am on Monday. Ihsanul joined the Liberation War in 1971 and fought in the western frontier as a member of the Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF). He was appointed the prime minister’s press secretary in 2015 for a year. Before joining the Prime Minister’s Office, Ihsanul worked as the president’s press secretary, and managing director and chief editor of the government-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha or BSS.

IVAC to accept visa applications till 3:30pm during Ramadan
City Desk :The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) has brought a change in its schedule ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan. The visa applications will be accepted until 3:30pm at the IVAC in Dhaka’s Jamuna Future Park from Mar 12, the High Commission of India said in a post on its official Facebook account on Saturday, reports bdnews24.com“Those with appointment slots between 3pm to 4pm are requested to reach IVAC before 3:30pm.”The 16 Indian visa application centres in Bangladesh are managed by the State Bank of India. They are located in Dhaka (Jamuna Future Park), Jashore, Khulna, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Satkhira, Bogura, Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla and Kushtia. All types of Indian visa applications are accepted at the IVAC based on date and time.
