Tourists wounded in deadly Afghanistan shooting are stable: hospital

Indian shares muted in special Saturday session
The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 settled 0.16% higher at 22,502, while the S&P BSE Sensex added 0.12% to 74,005.94Indian shares were little changed in a special session conducted on Saturday for stock exchanges to test a failsafe system for equity trading. India's markets regulator had scrutinised the stock exchanges - NSE and BSE, after a major trading outage in Feb 24, 2021 due to a technical glitch, when the bourses failed to migrate to the disaster recovery site. A similar special trading session was earlier held on March 2, 2024The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 settled 0.16% higher at 22,502, while the S&P BSE Sensex added 0.12% to 74,005.94. Among individual stocks, Nestle India added 2.23% and was the top Nifty 50 gainer. JSW Steel shed 1.81% and was the top Nifty 50 loser after posting a drop in fourth-quarter profit.

Bangladeshi mountaineer Babar Ali climbs Mount Everest
“Babar hoisted the Bangladeshi flag at the Everest peak around 8:30 am local time in Nepal. This time it is a Bangladeshi national reaching Everest after 11 years,” said Farhan Zaman, chief coordinator of Babar Ali’s expedition. Babar reached the Everest Base Camp on Apr 10. ”The most important factor in the Everest expedition is acclimatising to the height by practising climbing. He reached Camp 2 at an elevation of 21,300 feet directly on the first day.

Jashim Uddin, deputy commissioner of the Mirpur Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s traffic police, said the drivers of battery-run rickshaws and those involved with them blocked the Mirpur-10 square around 10am on Sunday. Jashim said the battery-run rickshaw drivers had gathered in Kalshi and other parts of the capital in the morning. He claimed they also assaulted drivers of pedal rickshaws and attacked some buses. The demonstration will start at 10:30am and push for a list of seven demands, including the removal of the ban, registration of battery-run vehicles, route permits, and licenses, according to Roksana Afroz Asha, the finance secretary of the organisation’s Dhaka Metropolitan branch.

Workshop on implementation of blended education method held at RU
RAJSHAHI, May 18, 2024 (BSS)-A daylong workshop on implementation of blended education method was held at Rajshahi University (RU) here today for formulating a master plan in this regard. They told the meeting that the blended learning program under this method involve the creation of different groups and stations for various activities and lessons. Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Research Network Muhammad Tourit discussed the issue while presenting his keynote paper titled "Blended Learning Roadmap: Cost Modelling and Estimation". Taking part in group-works, either vice-chancellors or their representatives from 10 public and 10 private universities put forward a set of recommendations on how to formulate a master plan accurately. Discussions were held based on the information and data received from the group works in the third phase of the workshop elaborately.

Mother, son among four killed by lightning strikes
Four people have been killed and another person injured after lightning strikes in different locations in Narsingdi, reports bdnews24.com. The incidents occurred in the Sadar Upazila's Alokbali and Shahartali's Hajipur areas on Saturday morning, according to Narsingdi Sadar Police Station OC Tanvir Ahmed. The dead were identified as Sufia Begum, 35, and her son Emon Mia, 10, from Alokbali village; rice harvesting worker Quayyum Mia, 20, from Raipura's Baghaikandi; and Mosleh Uddin, 55, from the Hajipur area. "My wife, son, a labourer, and I went to the fields in the morning to cut down paddy," he said. Locals rescued them and rushed them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where a doctor declared Sufia, Emon, and Quayyum dead.

A polling centre will be suspended if even a single fraudulent vote is cast, let alone if the centre is occupied, says Election Commissioner Md Ahsan Habib Khan. “If someone tries to use their muscle or black money to spread their influence, call the police,” he said. “Extensive campaigning will be done using loudspeakers in the respective areas to increase the voter turnout and ensure that voters can exercise their right to their ballots without fear,” he said. Free, fair, and acceptable elections must be ensured at any cost. Strict legal action will be taken if any candidate violates the electoral code of conduct or commits electoral offences.”The election commissioner instructed the local administration and the police to maintain law and order.
