LOS ANGELES, United States, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Los Angeles 2028 Olympics chiefs promised an "affordable and inclusive" Games on Tuesday as they prepared to open registration for a lottery to buy tickets. Wasserman was speaking in the shadow of the historic Los Angeles Coliseum on the eve of the first step towards tickets going on sale. "Our tickets are going to be affordable, our games will be accessible, and they're right here in our backyard," LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover said at the event. US swimming legend Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medallist and LA28's chief athlete officer, cited her own experience of going to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as a fan. I think that making tickets accessible and affordable for everyone here in the city of Los Angeles is going to inspire young people...because that's what the Olympics do -- they inspire people."

US court challenge to 'forced sale' of Venezuela oil company
CARACAS, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Representatives of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA said Tuesday they had appealed the US-forced sale of its prized Houston-based subsidiary Citgo to pay off creditors. In late November, a Delaware court authorized Citgo's sale to settle a long-running legal dispute. Citgo has been under the control of the Venezuelan opposition since 2019, when Washington recognized then opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader. Maduro's vice president Delcy Rodriguez, now the country's interim leader, had rejected Citgo being put up for auction last year, referring to it as a "forced sale." But since Maduro's capture, she has stressed her willingness to cooperate with US demands for access to Venezuela's vast oil wealth.

The move marked a significant shift in US export policy for advanced AI chips, which Joe Biden's administration had heavily restricted over national security concerns about Chinese military applications. Protests flare after BNP leader's death in custody

Bangladesh sets Guinness World Record with highest flag-parachuting demonstration
Bangladesh has inscribed its name in the Guinness World Records by setting a new world record for parachuting with the highest number of flags in hand on the occasion of the Great Victory Day on December 16, 2025. On Monday, the World Records Management Team officially informed Team Bangladesh of the achievement, said a press release of the Chief Adviser’s press wing. According to the description published on the Guinness World Records website: “The most flags flown simultaneously while skydiving (parachute jump) is 54 and was achieved by Team Bangladesh (Bangladesh) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 16 December 2025. “The team attempted this record to unite skydivers from across Bangladesh in a single historic achievement and demonstrate national collaboration. The attempt was made to commemorate Bangladesh’s 54th Victory Day,” according to the description.

Rajshahi loses over 16,000 hectares of arable land in 8 years
Arable land in Rajshahi is shrinking rapidly due to widespread excavation of ponds, posing a serious threat to agricultural production and soil fertility. The district has lost 16,159 hectares of arable land between 2015 and 2023, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). In the 2024–25 fiscal year, fish production in Rajshahi reached 84,803 tons, far exceeding the district’s local demand of 52,063 tons, reflecting the rapid expansion of commercial fish cultivation. Officials and farmers say much of the high-yielding agricultural land has been converted into ponds in violation of Soil Conservation Guidelines and Agricultural Land Protection and Land Use Act, 2018. But if I lease the same land for a commercial pond, I can earn between Tk 80,000 and Tk 120,000 annually.

Tarique Rahman to visit Sylhet after nearly two decades
After nearly two decades, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit Sylhet to formally launch the party’s election campaign for the 13th parliamentary election slated for February 12. Tarique last visited Sylhet in 2005 when he was the party’s senior joint secretary general. “January 22 will mark the formal beginning of our election campaign across the country. BNP leaders and activists from Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, including party-nominated parliamentary candidates, are expected to attend the rally.
