I am a born and raised Baltimorean and travel the streets of our city every day. The reason for my writing was wondering when all of the streets will be repaved? The temporary patches are full of loose gravel that rattles into the wheel wells and just make everything worse. Thank you for allowing me to write, and it would be nice if the mayor would make this a priority! — Dave Holloway, BaltimoreAdd your voice: Respond to this piece or other Sun content by submitting your own letter.

The number of patients hospitalised with dengue since Jan 1 increased by 12 to 2,581 in the 24 hours to Friday morning, the Directorate General of Health Services said. As many as 135 dengue patients were receiving treatment at hospitals in the morning, with 69 of them in Dhaka city. In 2023, Bangladesh recorded 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 deaths from the viral disease and the outbreak has continued this year. Experts attribute the deadliest outbreak of dengue last year to rising temperatures and insufficient efforts to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the virus. They warn that if authorities do not take preventive measures, dengue could become a year-round threat in Bangladesh, not just during the monsoon season.

A leader of the hill-based banned militant group Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, identified by police as the group's "chief arms supplier," has been arrested. Asked about the source of Rahim's weapons, he said, "During interrogation, we will investigate the source of these weapons and whether he has connections with anyone outside the country." The Bangladesh Army led a mission against the KNF after there were bloody clashes, bank robberies and weapons looting in the hill tracts. A few dozen KNF members were arrested while the authorities warned tourists not to travel to the hills. Following his arrest, extensive interrogation revealed details about the organisation's training, the source of arms and ammunition, and their funding.

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - The massive coral bleaching episode signaled by US authorities last month is expanding and deepening in reefs around the globe, scientists warned Thursday. Amid record ocean temperatures, coral bleaching has been recorded in 62 countries and territories since February 2023, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said -- an increase of nine from its warning in April. The consequences of coral bleaching are far-reaching, affecting not only the health of oceans but also the livelihoods of people, food security and local economies. The ongoing mass coral bleaching is the world's fourth on record, with three others occurring between 1998 to 2017. Understanding the consequences of coral bleaching can take time: in the Caribbean, for example, coral could survive the immediate heat stress only to die later from "disease outbreaks or aggregations of coral predators," Manzello added.
