Mercosur meeting begins in Puerto Iguazú
Foreign minister Santiago Cafiero is opening an ordinary meeting of Mercosur trade bloc’s common market council at 10 a.m. on Monday in Puerto Iguazú, Misiones province. The meeting is a prelude to Tuesday’s summit for heads of state of Mercosur countries and associate states. The meeting marks the transfer of Mercosur’s pro tempore presidency from Argentina to Brazil. Argentine officials will present the country’s work as pro tempore president in the first six months of the year. Bolivia is in the process of joining, and all other South American countries are associate states.

New York to dedicate street corner to Charly García
On the fortieth anniversary of his seminal album “Clics Modernos”, Charly García will be immortalized on the NYC street corner where the album’s famous cover photo was taken. The street art behind García in the pic was later destroyed during the construction of a hotel. Nonetheless, “Charly García Corner” has profiles on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube, where it has thousands of dedicated followers. García, now 71, is the defining Argentine rock act of the 20th century. The band was acclaimed among critics and the public for its folk rock sound and singable lyrics.

Google Doodle honors travesti activist Diana Sacayán
An Indigenous travesti with jasmines in her dark hair smiles at the world from today’s Google Doodle. She is wearing a poncho lined with the transgender flag and there’s a multitude marching behind her under a rainbow. Unlike its direct English translation, travesti in Argentina is a gender identity with deep political roots that is worn with pride. She had fought for the country’s new Gender Identity Law which allowed for that change— seminal legislation that defines gender identity as self-perceived, among other things. “When I go, I would wish for a mountain of flowers, the ones that those thousand loves I suffered for never knew to give me,” Sacayán wrote.

Translation troubles: big fingers and hairless tongues
Se la bancaBancar is a very versatile verb that means: to wait for, to support, to bear/put up with, to finance, and to take responsibility for. If someone tells you they want to say something sin pelos en la lengua, you may want to brace yourself. My translation was “I don’t want to mince my words” but it’s just not as forceful or evocative. The vice president has also used the idiom for political intrigue, referring to conspiring or overthinking, as she did this week. “Don’t get your knickers in a twist” might be a closer literal translation but would be further from the spirit of what was being said.

Bullrich spreads fake information about foreign college students
Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) primaries presidential candidate Patricia Bullrich said Friday that “almost half” of college students in Argentina are foreigners, blaming them for taking up places meant for Argentine nationals in universities. “Argentine universities are empty of Argentine students because foreign students come and take those places, they account for almost half of the enrollment,” she said in her dissertation in a forum organized by the International Foundation for Liberty (FIL, by its Spanish acronym.) The day before, Bullrich had signed an “ethical commitment” to “fight misinformation” during this year’s elections. “If it were true that our universities were populated by migrants, that would be fine because there are no second-class people. According to official information, out of all foreign college students in the country, 95.93% came from the Americas, 2.90% from Europe, and the remaining 1.17% from Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

We’re also engulfed in the history of how Homo sapiens evolved, as well as a graphic novel version of a dystopian book of one of Argentina’s most important writers. – EstefaníaSapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari (Harper, 2015, 464 pages)The book explores the history of humankind and the rise of the homo sapien species. The book discusses how Homo sapiens were a relatively unimportant species for a significant period of time and how we came to be the only human species. It is just now delving into how Homo sapiens permanently altered the Earth’s ecosystems, specifically looking at the colonization of Australia.

Argentina to pay the IMF with yuan and SDRs
The new agreement also doubled the government’s free access amount, taking it from US$ 5 billion to US$10 billion. The Herald reached out to the Economy Ministry, the IMF, and the Central Bank for comment but did not immediately receive a response. The deal includes an economic program that Argentina must comply with in order to receive SDR disbursements every three months, which are used to pay for the previous debt with the IMF. In July, Argentina has to pay another US$ 2.6 billion. As per the current schedule, the IMF staff’s upcoming fifth review of the program will evaluate Argentina’s performance until March.

Bond auction: government gets AR$882 billion
The Economy Ministry secured AR$ 873.1 billion yesterday in the second and last bond auction of the month. It also gained an extra AR$ 9.2 billion with today’s second round of the bid —meaning that it not only could pay for its AR$ 740 billion maturities but also got extra funding for future debt payments. Over the course of June, the Treasury achieved positive net financing of AR$584.8 billion, a refinancing rate of 150%. Yesterday, 1,142 bids were received, representing a nominal value of AR$1.1 trillion, of which AR$ 813.80 million were awarded — an effective value of AR$ 873.1 billion. Through a press release, the Ministry of Economy highlighted that 43% of the financing obtained corresponded to instruments maturing in 2023.

Four more arrested in smuggling incident that killed 53 migrants in Texas
U.S. officials in Texas have arrested four Mexicans who were indicted on suspicion of operating a human smuggling ring responsible for the deaths a year ago of 53 migrants packed into a truck during sweltering heat, the Justice Department said on Tuesday. The suspects shared routes, guides, stash houses and vehicles, storing some of their tractors and trailers at a private parking lot in San Antonio, prosecutors said. The indictment alleges some of the defendants knew the trailer’s air conditioning was broken and unable to blow cool air to the migrants inside. When the suspects opened the door after a three-hour journey, they found 48 of the migrants dead, including the pregnant woman, prosecutors allege. They were arrested on Monday in San Antonio, Houston and Marshall, Texas, and identified as Riley Covarrubias-Ponce, 30; Felipe Orduna-Torres, 28, Luis Alberto Rivera-Leal, 37, and Armando Gonzales-Ortega, 53, the statement said.

DesperateMigrants began amassing in Nuevo Laredo over the weekend once they realized CBP officials were admitting about 50 asylum seekers a day through the international bridge without CBP One appointments. A Venezuelan migrant in Nuevo Laredo said he was worried he might be extorted now that Laredo was open again for CBP One appointments. “We are clear-eyed about the limits of our ability to control the security situation in any town outside of the United States,” a senior CBP official told Reuters. When asked about the potential for continued extortion in Nuevo Laredo, the CBP official said migrants could apply for appointments elsewhere, and come to the city just for their appointments. Three migrants told Reuters that men who appeared to be cartel members told them to stay orderly, but had not been extorting recently arrived migrants for money.
