The group had flags, a big folder with information that they had allegedly been investigating, and an eagerness to be part of the human rights movement in Argentina. According to a years-long investigation, Martínez Moreira is not a lawyer, a sociologist, nor a son of desaparecidos. Adrián Martínez Moreira is not even his real name. “Two names came up — Adrián Martínez Moreira and a lawyer, Omar García. According to Efrón, the case impacted the human rights movement, leading to fights among different members.

Paraguay “would love” to do more trade with China, but Taiwan offers the best bet for moving the largely agricultural economy up the value chain, the country’s president-elect Santiago Pena said on Saturday on a visit to Taipei. Paraguay is the last South American country with formal relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. Honduras ended decades of ties in favor of Beijing this year, and only 13 countries now recognise Taiwan. “We have no constraints on doing trade with China. We would love to do more trade with the PRC,” he said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

June’s monthly inflation fell by 1.8 percentage points to 6%, below market expectations. Increases to regulated prices will come into play, although food prices — which have the greatest impact on the index — are still growing by less than in previous months. “In these past two weeks of July, food price inflation continued downward (an average 5% in the last four weeks) but with a high proportion of products on the rise,” explained sources from the consultancy LCG. Expectations of a new administration and future changes in relative prices will continue to keep inflation rates high. “Market expectations set the lowest base at 7%, although new impulses could happen if there is a broader exchange rate correction after the primary elections (PASO).”Originally published in Ambito.com

Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the fifth review of Argentina’s economic program are “pretty close” to finishing, according to Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa. IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack refused to answer whether the lender and Argentina will reach a deal before the end of July when the board is expected to go into recess. “I will just repeat that the teams are working intensively with a view to making progress and completing the fifth review,” she said at a briefing in Washington DC when a journalist asked her about the negotiation time frame. The deal includes an economic program that Argentina must comply with to receive disbursements every three months, which the government uses to pay the previous debt. The IMF staff’s upcoming fifth review of the program will evaluate Argentina’s performance until March.

DNA tests have confirmed that Cecilia Strzyzowski’s blood was found at her in-laws’ home — they are currently in pre-trial detention with their son and four other alleged collaborators for her murder. The Senas are a politically powerful family and police raids uncovered evidence — including the blood samples now confirmed to belong to Strzyzowski — at one of their properties. Other samples came from fabric cut from a mattress that the Senas donated days after Strzyzowski went missing. Amnesty International, the international human rights watchdog, recently launched a campaign demanding justice for Strzyzowski and reacted to today’s news with a communiqué. Justice Minister Martín Soria ordered a six-month takeover of presidential candidate Patricia Bullrich’s research institute, contending that it is being illegally used to fund her political campaign. The NGO, the National Institute of Strategic Studies on Security (IEES, by its Spanish acronym) was founded in 2016 and is presided over by Bullrich. In a tweet, Bullrich accused Economy Minister and presidential candidate Sergio Massa of “attacking her” through the Justice Minister. The IEES also paid for political consultants and election specialists, according to the IGJ. All my support to Patricia Bullrich,” Larreta tweeted.

The bus system in Buenos Aires is a completely different story. This is just one of the many differences between the Los Angeles and Buenos Aires bus experiences. Before you’re allowed to pay your fee, you have to tell the bus driver exactly which bus stop you’re getting off at: have the intersection of the street corners ready. There’s no such thing on the Buenos Aires bus. The terrifying efficiency and speed modeled by the Buenos Aires buses are the next step to achieving the American dream.

Latin America and the Caribbean received record flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) last year, a United Nations report showed on Monday, mostly into services, manufacturing and energy as spending recovered after the pandemic. The report by the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) found that FDI, or income from cross-border asset purchases, surged 55% from 2021 to hit about US$225 billion last year, the highest level ever recorded. “FDI flows to the region had not surpassed US$200 billion since 2013, so the 2022 recovery marks a major investment milestone for the past decade,” ECLAC said in the report. Brazil, the region’s biggest economy, took the lion’s share of investments at 41%, while Mexico, the second largest, took 17%. Meanwhile, in a shift from 2021, new projects in fossil fuels and the auto sector surpassed those in renewable energy.

By Valen Iricibar y Estefania PozzoCustoms has filed legal complaints against five companies for import scams, carrying out 38 raids in banks and businesses today across Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata in which two people were arrested. “I’ll simplify in a very colloquial way: they’re fake importers, sham portfolios which faked SIMIS, the earlier tools we used to import, with sham documentation, sham invoices, sham customs forms to send money abroad without importing anything,” said Guillermo Michel, head of Customs, in a press conference. Today’s official government communiqué mentioned 23 raids but sources close to the matter told the Herald that a total of 38 raids were carried out in banks and companies. The Herald reached out to two other banks who confirmed their involvement but did not want to comment directly on the matter. At the inauguration of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline, Economy Minister Sergio Massa thanked the private sector companies involved for carrying out the project “properly and on time”. Businesses approve of the work, too: energy sector sources expect greater gas production, with Argentina becoming an important regional actor. Argentina must find a public-private partnership model, which could be mixed works or private works, with the State in the essential role of regulating. Sources in the company say they have just finished two projects in Córdoba that will be key for the “future reversal of the Northern Pipeline”. There is a unanimous view among companies in the hydrocarbon sector, according to Luciano Fucello, country manager at oil and gas company NCS Multistage.

The literal translation of autogestión would be “self-regulation” or “self-management,” but it’s not just that. It makes us double-take almost every time because it is deceptively simple: espacio político could just be “political space” but then you look at it and go, wait, what exactly is a “political space”? Then go with that or make sure that there is ample background information for “political space” to overcome its ambiguity. Here we use “break your soul” to talk about a grueling effort and sacrifice, often for a cause that matters a lot to you. They got the shot, but we felt that something was lost when translating it to “show of unity.” There’s something subtly catty about “unity photo” that just felt like a shame to omit.

By Facundo Iglesia and Martina JaureguyThe first of three tranches of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline was officially launched today in Salliqueló, Buenos Aires province. “We will no longer import gas in ships because we’ll use the gas in our subsoil,” he said. The pipelineThe 573-kilometer-long pipeline’s path starts at the gas treatment plant in Tratayén, Neuquén, which is located at the heart of the Vaca Muerta shale oil and shale gas deposit. Savings will grow to US$4.2 billion for the whole of 2024, by replacing liquefied natural gas, gas from Bolivia, and liquid fuel imports, while increasing the availability of gas at competitive prices for industry, businesses, and homes. Vaca Muerta is the fourth-largest shale oil reservoir in the world and the second-largest shale gas reservoir.

As a lifelong fan raised by a football fanatic, Argentine football culture was almost mythic to me growing up. Last Sunday, we attended a Boca Juniors home match against Sarmiento, and it truly lived up to the hype surrounding Argentina football fans. How to get ticketsAs mentioned above, it is incredibly hard as a visitor to get into a Boca game. I instead realized that the Boca fans were whistling at them with a shrillness I didn’t think possible. Although the game itself took a while to pick up with a scoreless first half, if you have a chance to go to a Boca game it’ll be an unforgettable experience.
