For me, from the first day, the only way to live in Rio was to stay in a favela. Vidigal is like a Disney version of ‘favela experience.’ Having the experience but being able to remove yourself from it too. It is a popular accommodation for travelers looking for a Rio experience that is more “authentic” than what’s to be found in Rio’s more established neighborhoods. “Without a doubt, my experience of Rio was different because I lived in the favela. But if you live in the favela, you’ll experience a different side of Rio.”Still, while tourism is welcomed in this favela, it has its drawbacks, as Naty explains.

When a regular walked in and joked with Mauro about his order, Mauro [jokingly] threatened to kick him out again. But if someone doesn’t like my food, that’s not my problem.” In a way, Mauro is a walking stereotype. All noodles are dry, because “if we served fresh noodles everyday my stomach would have exploded long ago.” The carbonara is a reliable favorite. This only works if the food and atmosphere are good, and Mauro.it has a decade to show that good food trumps all else. The restaurant is simple, decked out with a mini almacen where they sell imported noodles and caffè Mauro.

President Mauricio Macri’s administration today managed to block the opposition from putting the brakes on the government’s tarifazo, or marked price increase in utilities, in a Congressional session. They are set to reconvene in Congress next week to continue fighting against the tarifazo. There had in fact been two special sessions on the agenda today, one encouraged by the FR and another pushed for by the Victory Front (FpV), which are the main opposition parties. However, the session was bogged down by heated discussions over how the different motions should be voted: whether they should be approved with two thirds majority or a simple majority (over half of the votes). In order to stop the motion to intervene in Aranguren’s tenure as Energy Minister, the Cambiemos Lower House caucus leader, Mario Negri proposed that he should be “invited” to give explanations“It’s a lollipop made of wood,” said Sergio Massa, head of the Renewal Front (FR).

Buenos Aires City Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta today announced a plan to urbanize Villas 31 and 31 bis — shantytowns, for lack of a better word, located in the neighborhood of Retiro — and officially integrate them into the City of Buenos Aires. In an event taking place in the villa today, Larreta explained that the project has three main goals: improve education, health and labor. Villa 31, one of the oldest shantytowns in the country, was created by the City Government as a result of the housing problems that resulted from the 1929 Great Depression. Infobae reported that in order to finance the initiative, the Larreta administration will sell a part of the City’s shooting range in Nuñez and intends to get a US $170 million loan from the World Bank as well. Let’s briefly break these down:Education: this is perhaps the most ambitious project, as Larreta announced his administration will move its Education Ministry into the neighborhood.

May also mentions Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra’s bid to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations. Meanwhile, the UK has continually asked for Argentina to lift certain laws that sanction oil companies exploring the Malvinas’ territory for fossil fuels. According to Clarín, which today revealed it had access to the letter, Macri received May’s letter in the context of diplomatic talks aimed towards a meeting between the two leaders next month, before the G-20 Summit in China. The US gave Malcorra its endorsement in June, after which the UK was apparently faced with a diplomatic dilemma because the UN has consistently endorsed the Argentine claim over the Malvinas islands. Unsurprisingly, Héctor Timerman’s lawyers already requested Bonadio be removed from the case and, in case he’s not, requested the whole case be dismissed again. Judge Bonadio requested the “cover up” case’s files to use as consultation material for another case he’s investigating, which looks into whether Cristina and former Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman committed treason. Both cases — treason and cover up — were archived by Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas last year. Once he has gone over the case files, he could send them to the prosecutor investigating the treason allegations, Eduardo Taiano. Read more: Case Investigating Cristina For Treason Regarding AMIA Bombing ReopenedBoth cases clearly overlap, and even though Rafecas clarified to his colleague that Nisman’s investigation has been dismissed and can only be used for consultation purposes, Bonadio could take some steps to sidetrack the dismissal and re-open the case.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Putin, Erdogan agree on steps to mend relations, amid tensions with WestRussian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a press conference following their meeting in St Petersburg, yesterday. Repeatedly calling Putin his “dear friend,” Erdogan refrained from mentioning any sticking points after the talks, saying he expects ties to fully blossom again soon. The shoot-down, which Putin called a “treacherous stab in the back,” brought relations to a freezing point where they remained for seven months until Erdogan apologized to Russia in June. Turkey has pressed the United States hard to extradite Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish cleric the government blames for the failed coup. The dispute has strained US-Turkish ties, with some Turkish officials implying Washington could have been behind the coup.

Resignation prompts PJ debate on replacement Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Echegaray brings end to conflict-ridden AGN tenureRicardo Echegaray’s short-lived tenure as Auditor General drew to a close yesterday, as formally submitted his resignation, paving the way for the Justicialist Party (PJ) to name a replacement. As the largest opposition party in Congress, the PJ has the right to name the leader of the AGN, which audits government programmes and expenditures. That nod sparked division not only within the Peronist party but also within the ruling Let’s Change (Cambiemos) government, after some expressed concern about the corruption charges hanging over Echegaray’s head. Echegaray had already been suspended from the Auditor General’s Office (AGN) by a judge in light of a corruption indictment, but he had vowed at first to fight the suspension and stay on and he initially had support from the PJ in that endeavour. Members of the PJ leadership were reportedly holed up in a central Buenos Aires hotel last night to settle on a candidate to replace the former AFIP chief, with some suggesting that former lawmaker and former AGN auditor Oscar Lamberto would be given the nod.
