Edgardo Bauza, the new coach for Argentina’s national football team, is currently in Spain and will be meeting with Argentine heartbreaker Lionel Messi on Thursday morning. Mascherano is another leader of the team that has expressed interest in leaving, so Bauza will be talking with him as well to see if he will join the National Football Team in the 2018 World Cup. He is expected to receive the final word on whether or not Messi will be playing with la Selección in the 2018 World Cup. Don’t be fooled: Bauza is not going to meet with Messi to reminisce about all the good times or bribe him to take back his jersey. The weight of Messi and Mascherano’s decisions will reveal itself shortly.

May also mentions Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra’s bid to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations. Meanwhile, the UK has continually asked for Argentina to lift certain laws that sanction oil companies exploring the Malvinas’ territory for fossil fuels. According to Clarín, which today revealed it had access to the letter, Macri received May’s letter in the context of diplomatic talks aimed towards a meeting between the two leaders next month, before the G-20 Summit in China. The US gave Malcorra its endorsement in June, after which the UK was apparently faced with a diplomatic dilemma because the UN has consistently endorsed the Argentine claim over the Malvinas islands. Does Macri run his own Snapchat account? This past June, Facebook Live hosted the debate between Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten, the leader of the Labor Party, in an effort to widen the viewership of the debate.

Unsurprisingly, Héctor Timerman’s lawyers already requested Bonadio be removed from the case and, in case he’s not, requested the whole case be dismissed again. Judge Bonadio requested the “cover up” case’s files to use as consultation material for another case he’s investigating, which looks into whether Cristina and former Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman committed treason. Both cases — treason and cover up — were archived by Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas last year. Once he has gone over the case files, he could send them to the prosecutor investigating the treason allegations, Eduardo Taiano. Read more: Case Investigating Cristina For Treason Regarding AMIA Bombing ReopenedBoth cases clearly overlap, and even though Rafecas clarified to his colleague that Nisman’s investigation has been dismissed and can only be used for consultation purposes, Bonadio could take some steps to sidetrack the dismissal and re-open the case.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Putin, Erdogan agree on steps to mend relations, amid tensions with WestRussian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a press conference following their meeting in St Petersburg, yesterday. Repeatedly calling Putin his “dear friend,” Erdogan refrained from mentioning any sticking points after the talks, saying he expects ties to fully blossom again soon. The shoot-down, which Putin called a “treacherous stab in the back,” brought relations to a freezing point where they remained for seven months until Erdogan apologized to Russia in June. Turkey has pressed the United States hard to extradite Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish cleric the government blames for the failed coup. The dispute has strained US-Turkish ties, with some Turkish officials implying Washington could have been behind the coup.

Resignation prompts PJ debate on replacement Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Echegaray brings end to conflict-ridden AGN tenureRicardo Echegaray’s short-lived tenure as Auditor General drew to a close yesterday, as formally submitted his resignation, paving the way for the Justicialist Party (PJ) to name a replacement. As the largest opposition party in Congress, the PJ has the right to name the leader of the AGN, which audits government programmes and expenditures. That nod sparked division not only within the Peronist party but also within the ruling Let’s Change (Cambiemos) government, after some expressed concern about the corruption charges hanging over Echegaray’s head. Echegaray had already been suspended from the Auditor General’s Office (AGN) by a judge in light of a corruption indictment, but he had vowed at first to fight the suspension and stay on and he initially had support from the PJ in that endeavour. Members of the PJ leadership were reportedly holed up in a central Buenos Aires hotel last night to settle on a candidate to replace the former AFIP chief, with some suggesting that former lawmaker and former AGN auditor Oscar Lamberto would be given the nod.

Real laid siege to the opposition goal for most of the additional 30 minutes and Sevilla needed Rico to pull off save after save. Jorge Sampaoli’s men then went in front with a penalty in the 72nd minute after Ramos brought down Vitolo. Yevhen Konoplyanka, who had come on as a substitute five minutes earlier, sent Real goalkeeper Kiko Casilla the wrong way from the spot.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Ciudadanos opens door to Rajoy as Spain PMMADRID — Spain’s Ciudadanos party said yesterday it was open to supporting a conservative-led administration, if acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy agreed first to a package of political reforms, in a bid to resolve an eight-month government impasse. Rivera said yesterday he would ask Rajoy to pursue an electoral reform. Rajoy and Rivera are due to meet today to go over the details. Even with support from Ciudadanos (“Citizens”), the fourth-biggest party in the country, Rajoy would still be shy of the 176 seats he needs in the 350-strong Lower House to form a stable government. After two inconclusive elections in December and June, Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) is well short of a parliamentary majority despite winning the most votes, and has so far struggled to win backing from rivals to form a new government.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 LEBAC note rate sinks to lowest level yet in Macri eraThe Central Bank cut its reference rate yet again, as its weekly LEBAC note auction was down by 0.25 percentage points in yesterday’s sale, reaching 29.75 percent on the year for the shortest-term notes. When Sturzenegger took office, rates stood at 30 percent, before being raised to 38 percent in a move to drastically cut the amount of money circulating. The Central Bank inaugurated a new version of its website yesterday, with monthly inflation and 35-day LEBAC notes rates highlighted in the displayed information. The monetary authority argues that rates should remain slightly above monthly inflation for their policy to be successful. With monthly inflationary figures now finally slowing down following the big spike seen following December’s devaluation and the government’s subsequent utility rate hikes, the Central Bank argues that there is room for cautious interest rate cuts, as otherwise the monetary contraction could prove too severe.

Of the US $16.3 billion plan, US $5.5 billion is destined to the railways, resulting in 3,800 km of renewed rails and 800 km of refurbished rails, La Nacion reports. So what does Macri’s track record as Buenos Aires mayor, along with the actions taken thus far, indicate about the future of the railways? It does appear as if neither side of the polarized political spectrum is correct in their assessment of the situation. Argentina has made an extraordinary amount of ideological u-turns throughout its history, and this has shown perhaps most of all in the country’s railways. The first of three stages is due to commence construction before the end of 2016 and, when completed, it would double the number of daily passengers on the 815 km commuter rail network to 3 million.
