Soccer Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Last-gasp Carvajal strikes wins Super Cup for RealSampaoli’s Sevilla defeated 3-2 after extra-timeTRONDHEIM, Norway — Dani Carvajal scored a stunning late goal as Champions League winners Real Madrid beat Europa League holders Sevilla 3-2 after extra-time in an all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup thriller in Trondheim, Norway yesterday. Carvajal’s memorable late goal meant Sevilla, who have won the Europa League for the last three years, suffered a hat-trick of Super Cup defeats. Real laid siege to the opposition goal for most of the additional 30 minutes and Sevilla needed Rico to pull off save after save. Jorge Sampaoli’s men then went in front with a penalty in the 72nd minute after Ramos brought down Vitolo. Yevhen Konoplyanka, who had come on as a substitute five minutes earlier, sent Real goalkeeper Kiko Casilla the wrong way from the spot.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Ciudadanos opens door to Rajoy as Spain PMMADRID — Spain’s Ciudadanos party said yesterday it was open to supporting a conservative-led administration, if acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy agreed first to a package of political reforms, in a bid to resolve an eight-month government impasse. Rivera said yesterday he would ask Rajoy to pursue an electoral reform. Rajoy and Rivera are due to meet today to go over the details. Even with support from Ciudadanos (“Citizens”), the fourth-biggest party in the country, Rajoy would still be shy of the 176 seats he needs in the 350-strong Lower House to form a stable government. After two inconclusive elections in December and June, Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) is well short of a parliamentary majority despite winning the most votes, and has so far struggled to win backing from rivals to form a new government.

Wednesday, August 10, 2016 LEBAC note rate sinks to lowest level yet in Macri eraThe Central Bank cut its reference rate yet again, as its weekly LEBAC note auction was down by 0.25 percentage points in yesterday’s sale, reaching 29.75 percent on the year for the shortest-term notes. When Sturzenegger took office, rates stood at 30 percent, before being raised to 38 percent in a move to drastically cut the amount of money circulating. The Central Bank inaugurated a new version of its website yesterday, with monthly inflation and 35-day LEBAC notes rates highlighted in the displayed information. The monetary authority argues that rates should remain slightly above monthly inflation for their policy to be successful. With monthly inflationary figures now finally slowing down following the big spike seen following December’s devaluation and the government’s subsequent utility rate hikes, the Central Bank argues that there is room for cautious interest rate cuts, as otherwise the monetary contraction could prove too severe.

Of the US $16.3 billion plan, US $5.5 billion is destined to the railways, resulting in 3,800 km of renewed rails and 800 km of refurbished rails, La Nacion reports. So what does Macri’s track record as Buenos Aires mayor, along with the actions taken thus far, indicate about the future of the railways? It does appear as if neither side of the polarized political spectrum is correct in their assessment of the situation. Argentina has made an extraordinary amount of ideological u-turns throughout its history, and this has shown perhaps most of all in the country’s railways. The first of three stages is due to commence construction before the end of 2016 and, when completed, it would double the number of daily passengers on the 815 km commuter rail network to 3 million.

In the past week since Pokémon Go was introduced in Argentina, the Metropolitan Police have registered a higher quantity of petty theft. Ricardo Pedace, the deputy of the Metropolitan Police, affirmed that in the past week, the department has noticed a spike in Pokémon-centric crime. A young college student in San Fransisco was shot and killed while playing Pokémon Go in Aquatic Park, according to the San Francisco Examiner. Unfortunately for Pokémon Go players, iPhones are real, Pokémon are not. While traipsing through strange neighborhoods on a hunt for virtual reality monster pets is ostensibly fun, your Pokémon cannot defend you against someone in your own world.

It apparently really does take two to tango: after US President Barack Obama famously took to the dance floor while in Argentina this past March, Secretary of State John Kerry didn’t miss his chance to do the same while in Buenos Aires last week. And, as the following photographic evidence suggests, Kerry tried out a few moves of his own in a quick, impromptu lesson. Kerry — a tango aficionado, it turns out — reworked his 24-hour schedule in the Southern Cone to squeeze in a few hours at the Rojo Tango Show at the Faena Hotel, a dance hall previously frequented by the likes of Sting, the Rolling Stones and John Travolta, Rojo Tango sales director Diego Messano told me. “He’s very nice — a huge tango fan!” Messano replied. Meanwhile, I’m rather hoping Kerry and Obama occasionally break from policy briefings to sashay down the halls of the White House, or clink Malbec glasses to another screening of Scent of a Woman.

In the Patagonian city of Bariloche, gas bills went up by as much as 2,500 percent, leading Mayor Gustavo Genusso to actually tell the city’s residents to not pay their upcoming gas bills back in May. Energy Minister Juan José Aranguren has announced that he will hold informational sessions this week to explain to the public how electricity and gas bill hikes will work and to get some feedback from concerned citizens. A final decision determining whether the government-sanctioned increases will hold lies with the Supreme Court. Some Argentines are now asking to prohibit the game on various memorial sites in the country. “The State must uphold a clear message when it comes to people’s behavior in the Memory sites that were created for the reflection of collective memory and identity. An app like Pokemon Go can’t be used freely in a space that means so much to so many of us,” Ferreyra said. Some locations, like the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan, have asked to be removed from the game while others, like the Holocaust Memorial Museum in the US, have asked visitors to refrain from playing while present. Ban Ki-moon praised Macri’s “very generous and compassionate leadership” following his decision in June to take in 3,000 Syrian refugees. Ban Ki-Moon also expressed support for Malcorra as she pursues a position as his predecessor. While visiting President Mauricio Macri in Argentina, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the head of state for agreeing to receive Syrian refugees and spoke fondly of Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, who is currently in the running to replace Ban Ki-moon when he steps down at the end of December. Malcorra is one of the candidates in the running to succeed Ban Ki-moon and in the most recent pre-selection vote by the UN’s Security Council, she came in third. Ban Ki-moon said that he would like to “highlight the fact that Susana Malcorra was a first-rate advisor as cabinet chief in the United Nations, before she began working as a wonderful [minister] for Argentina.”Ban Ki-moon also had a private meeting with Malcorra at the Palacio San Martin yesterday afternoon.

The perception that the political class has used its position to pocket money and favour political allies is widespread. People want the political class to put the house back in order and, preferably, people want to bring in new blood to the capital city of Brasilia. From a political standpoint, 2016 has been a year to forget for Brazil. In addition to Rousseff, the leaders of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies have had to resign from their posts. Several prominent politicians have been implicated, including former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2002-2010) and dozens of other lawmakers.
