A black metallic ore critical to electric vehicles, telecoms and aeronautics is funding a brutal war in the Democratic Republic of Congo—despite U.S. efforts to stop the use of so-called conflict minerals. U.S. lawmakers have sought to prevent minerals commonly mined in eastern Congo—tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold—from financing conflict in the region. Regular coltan smuggling through Rwanda makes it difficult for companies that source tantalum from international smelters to ensure that they aren’t financing conflict there. But coltan from militia-controlled areas such as Rubaya continues to flow into international supply chains, according to researchers. The U.S. government warned companies in July that traceability initiatives meant to ensure that tantalum and other Congolese minerals are conflict free, are failing.

The pharmacy chain reported a net loss for the fiscal year and said retail sales in the fourth quarter fell 3.5 percent. Walgreens plans to close about 1,200 locations over the next three years as part of a cost-cutting plan, the company said Tuesday. That represents about 9.5 percent of the pharmacy chain's 12,500 locations worldwide, though it wasn't immediately clear what percentage of U.S. stores would close. Executives had considered shuttering far more sites - the company in June said 25 percent of its retail locations were underperforming, making them candidates for closure. Chief executive Tim Wentworth said the company will focus on "stabilizing" its retail pharmacy business.

Not really. That's a major oversimplification. There are trade deals that reduce costs for American consumers and business and military alliances that stabilize trade and prevent/deter war that would disrupt markets and needlessly raise costs for everyone. I know is popular to make claims that anything outside our own borders is inconsequential or inherently corrupt and a net harm to America but that's generally not the case. There are specific things that are problems that need to be addressed on a case by case basis.

Lilly Ledbetter Leaves Legacy Of Equal Pay Advocacy Trailblazer’s fight for fair wages reshaped U.S. law and inspired countless activistsOn October 12, 2024, Lilly Ledbetter, the American activist whose fight for equal pay inspired landmark legislation, passed away at the age of 86. Her efforts culminated two years later when President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act on January 29, 2009. This was the first bill he enacted after his inauguration, and it eliminated the restrictive statute of limitations for filing pay discrimination claims, allowing workers to sue within six months of discovering any form of pay discrimination, no matter when it had originally occurred. The film chronicled her life, making her story accessible to new generations and eleviating conversations around equal pay standards. Despite the progress ushered by the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the gender pay gap persists.
