Nuclear scientists hail US fusion breakthroughThe Nuclear Ignition Facility in California is working on getting energy from nuclear fusion, where isotopes are combined, rather than split, as happens in fission. LOS ANGELES: Nuclear scientists using lasers the size of three football fields said Tuesday they had generated a huge amount of energy from fusion, possibly offering hope for the development of a new clean energy source. Nuclear fusion is considered by some scientists to be a potential energy of the future, particularly because it produces little waste and no greenhouse gases. In the fusion process, two light atomic nuclei are "married" to create a heavy one. In this experiment scientists used two isotopes of hydrogen, giving rise to helium.

New Zealand PM warns virus outbreak will growNew Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, seen here in March 2021, has said the discovery of new coronavirus cases justifies her decision to issue nationwide stay-at-home orders. Ardern confirmed New Zealand was dealing with the highly transmissible Delta variant linked to the outbreak in Australia that authorities have so far been unable to contain. "We're expecting more," she said as officials revealed modelling predicted the cluster grow to 120 cases, even with stringent restrictions in place. Ardern was confident that even with more cases, her government's strategy of eliminating the virus, rather than just containing it, would succeed. "Today's re-introduction of Level 4 restrictions to activity across New Zealand is a stark example of how unpredictable and disruptive the virus is proving to be," it said.

Earthquake, storm and floods: no relief in sight for Haiti as toll risesA woman in front of her home, devastated by Saturday's earthquake, in Camp Perrin, in Haïti, le 16 août 2021LES CAYES (HAITI) - The death toll from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti has risen to 1,941, the Caribbean nation's civil protection agency said Tuesday, as a tropical storm brought torrential downpours on survivors already coping with catastrophe. With more than 60,000 homes destroyed and 76,000 damaged, the United Nations' children's agency UNICEF said that more than half a million children have been affected by the disaster. Aftershocks continued to rock the ground in Les Cayes days after the quake, further terrifying the residents. In 2010, in the aftermath of a horrific earthquake that killed 200,000 people, Haiti saw a deadly cholera outbreak caused by sewage from a United Nations base. The international support is a relief for the medical team at the hospital in Les Cayes.

Qantas' new rule comes after Australia's conservative government said it would not make vaccines mandatory but would leave businesses to implement their own policies. SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter on Tuesday announced a new feature to allow users to flag content that could contain misinformation, a scourge that has only grown during the pandemic. "We're testing a feature for you to report Tweets that seem misleading - as you see them," the social network said from its safety and security account. Users can then be more specific, flagging the misleading tweet as potentially containing misinformation about "health," "politics" and "other." For example, Twitter began blocking users in March who have been warned five times about spreading false information about vaccines.
