Tokyo finally reaches the finishing lineIt is no secret that the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics was not exactly plain sailing, primarily due to the Covid pandemic. We were constantly greeted by smiling locals practising their English with "hello", "good morning", "you're welcome", and "thank you", and most pleasant it was too. Hotel staff were particularly polite and simply going to the coffee shop for breakfast you would exchange a dozen greetings of "good morning". In fact they were still saying "good morning" in the afternoon, evening and night. Every foreigner who walked past was greeted with a chirpy "good morning".

Nevertheless, the real concern is that this order will not do too much to protect our coral reefs. The ban covers only 24 marine national parks in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Only sunscreen products that contain the chemical compounds Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3, BP-3), Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), 4-Methylbenzylid Camphor (4MBC) and Butylparaben are prohibited. The ban on sunscreen is a small step that will send a message to consumers and tourists. Yet, the state and developers must move to save coral reefs too.
