LONDON: England will require more heroics from Ben Stokes if they are to pull off an unlikely victory over Australia on Sunday and level an Ashes series threatening to slide out of their control. Chasing 371 for victory at Lord’s, England had their top-order ripped apart by Aussie pace duo Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins as they stumbled to 114-4 at the close of day four. But with captain Stokes still there, Ben Duckett unbeaten on 50 after a massive let-off just before stumps and the destructive Jonny Bairstow still to come in, there is still hope, according to England’s batting coach Marcus Trescothick. “I think there’s always hope with Ben there, two Bens there, Jonny coming in and the bowlers,” Trescothick told the BBC. But they will be wary of Stokes who memorably scored an unbeaten 135 against them at Headingley in 2019 when England chased down 359 despite being 286-9.

Pakistan football team’s dismal performance in the four-nation tournament in Mauritius and the eight-nation SAFF Championship in Bengaluru must have disturbed the authorities greatly. Pakistan lost three matches in Mauritius and then lost the initial two with 4-0 score lines against India and Kuwait in the SAFF Cup, which also showed them exit door. We need domestic football events which is the only way to get talent through. The big problem is that the players of the Pakistan national team did not have a block in the middle of the field. They did not manage to stop the pass in depth on the sides and behind the back of the defenders of Pakistan team.

With increasing economic challenges, people tend to lose their composure earlier than when they are in a stable frame of mind. More than ever before, there is a need to consciously make an effort to be courteous, kind and amiable towards each other. Just imagine the power of politeness and kindness. Of course, it cannot solve our issues, but it can help us deal with them with less frustration and more courage. Optimism is the need of the hour in our collective effort to make Pakistan more progressive, prosperous and positive.
