NA body shows solidarity with Armed Forces
ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Thursday expressed solidarity with the Armed Forces of Pakistan who, they said, are the pride of our nation as it strongly condemned the incidents of May 9. MNA Barjees Tahir moved a resolution as under: “The Standing Committee on Defence expresses solidarity with the Armed Forces of Pakistan, who are the pride of our nation. We stand with our Armed Forces.” The Committee passed the resolution unanimously and recommended that the perpetrators of the violent incidents must be dealt with an iron hand. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence thanked the committee for recognizing the role and sacrifices of the Armed Forces of Pakistan to ensure the prosperity of the country. The committee expressed its desire to visit the General Head Quarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi as a symbol of solidarity with the Armed Forces of Pakistan.

JUI spokesperson calls for ban on PTI, labels it a terrorist party
ISLAMABAD - The spokesperson of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) a terrorist party and called for its ban. Ghori alleged that Imran Khan has once again incited his party workers against institutions by supporting attacks on military installations. He claimed that Imran Khan is misleading the youth and has destroyed their future. The JUI spokesperson maintained that Imran Khan and his party pose a threat to the integrity of Pakistan, putting the country at risk for the sake of power. ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday said the nation had witnessed both “constructive and destructive” mindsets in the last one year as the former brought destruction to the country while the latter served the masses. She said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave a historic package for farmers which proved a harbinger of bumper wheat crops. The prime minister, she said, had started consultations related to the budget with the departments concerned and he had formed two sub-committees regarding agriculture. The prime minister directed that all agriculture tube-wells should be fully solar powered and he directed to ensure the best support price of wheat for the prosperity of farmers. The committees would submit their report to the Prime Minister within three days.

Pemra bars channels from giving air time to ‘hate mongers, facilitators’
ISLAMABAD: There should be a media boycott of “hate mongers, perpetrators and their facilitators”, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) said in its recent directive to television channels, advising them to remain “vigilant” and not give airtime to such people. Issued on Wednesday, the Pemra notification stated that while the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to freedom of expression, there are exceptions to this right. On this day, the notification stated, “zealots of [a] political party” attacked state and public properties, endangered innocent lives, and promoted anti-state to weaken the country and state institutions, adding that caution must be exercised in this regard. Planners and perpetrators of hateful violence should not be promoted on television, and violent, discriminatory content not should be broadcast, the regulator stated. “No licensee shall broadcast any live programme unless there is an effective delaying mechanism put in place in order to ensure effective monitoring and editorial control in conformity with this Code.”

Two soldiers martyred in cross-border firing from Iran
Two Pakistan army soldiers embraced martyrdom after terrorists from across the Iran border targeted a security forces’ post in Balochistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday. According to the military’s media wing, a group of terrorists targeted a security forces’ post in Singwan area of District Kech in Balochistan along the Pakistan-Iran border. However, during the intense fire exchange, two soldiers embraced martyrdom while fighting bravely with the terrorists. The martyred soldiers were identified as Sepoy Hasnain Ishtiaq, a 34 years-old resident of district Dera Ghazi Khan, and Sepoy Inayat Ullah, a 27 years-old resident of district Jhal Magsi. It said that the security forces, in step with the nation, remain determined to thwart attempts at sabotaging peace and stability all along the borders in Balochistan.

Govt cuts petrol price for next fortnight
The government has reduced the prices of petroleum products for next fortnight to provide relief to the masses. Announcing the new prices, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said per litre price of petrol has been slashed by 8 rupees while that of High Speed Diesel by 5 rupees. Similarly, the price of Light Diesel Oil has been reduced by 5 rupees per litre while price of Kerosene oil will remain unchanged. The new prices are applicable from today.

India assumed the rotating chairmanship of the SCO at the Samarkand Summit on September 16, 2022. The statement confirmed that all SCO member states -- including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan -- were invited to attend the summit.

Pakistan keen to cut a ‘new’ IMF deal
Sources told The Express Tribune that the prime minister had revealed Pakistan’s intentions to sign a follow-up bailout package during his telephonic conversation with the IMF managing director on the weekend. In order to repay $25 billion debt in the next fiscal year, Pakistan has to have an IMF umbrella. But, there a few members of the economic team think that the IMF programme is a necessity at this point in time. Dr Pasha added that the government remained engaged with the IMF at the technical level, and she noted progress on that account. “We have clearly told the IMF managing director (Kristalina Georgieva) that the government wants to complete the programme.

HRCP insists on civilian supremacy to end crisis
ISLAMABAD - The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called for civilian supremacy amidst an escalating political crisis in the country and warned that any further disruption to the democratic process could significantly exacerbate the difficulties currently faced by the nation. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the HRCP voiced serious concerns over the degradation of civilian supremacy, a situation that the government appears unable, or unwilling, to rectify. Concurrently, the Commission criticised the opposition for its divisive politics and disregard for the rule of law, contributing to the destructive protests in early May. The independence and impartiality of the judiciary, vital elements for maintaining the balance of power, are also under threat, according to the HRCP. The HRCP raised objections against trying civilians under the Pakistan Army Act 1952, insisting that civilian laws are sufficient for dealing with those responsible for property destruction.

Pakistan face India in Junior Asia Cup final
LAHORE - Pakistan juniors played outstanding hockey against Malaysia and outpaced them by 6-2 in the Junior Asia Cup 2023 in Oman. Now in the final of the mega event, the boys in green will take on arch-rivals India today (Thursday). The sixth goal was scored by Arbaaz Ahmed in the 58th minute, while Danish and Prabhu scored goals for Malaysia. Abdul Rahman was declared the player of the final. The final of the event will be played between Pakistan and India on June 1.

I, Dr Farid Ahmed Malik, son of Nazir Ahmed Malik, desire to revive and restore Lahore, the city of my birth. The Lahore Omnibus Service ( LOS ) was also launched from here which covered the entire length and breadth of the city. The Lahore Improvement Trust (LIT), later the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) was created for town planning and approval of building plans. The government of PTI decided to hold direct elections for the Mayor of Lahore which is a good idea to put the city back on track. With a powerful directly elected Mayor, Lahore can also brigten as it used to be, a functional city in control of its residents, not imported civil servants and administrators seeking instructions from CM/PM secretariats.
