A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps in Gombe State, Khamis Musa, with state code GM/22A/3185, has denied donating his monthly N30,000 allowance for the purchase of nomination form for the All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu. Musa trended for allegedly saying he would sacrifice his allowance in support of Tinubu’s emergence as Nigeria’s president. In a message to refute the claim, which was made available to our correspondent, the corps member said he was expected to be non-partisan. However, it was unclear why the corps member came to the realisation, whether he was pressured to rescind his earlier decision or not. “I wish to remain neutral in my conduct as a corps member during the service year and distance myself from partisan politics,” Musa added.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian, Martins Oloja and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, have expressed different views on the establishment of a national electoral offences commission to tackle impunity in Nigeria’s balloting. They made their opinions known, yesterday, in Abuja, at a discussion titled, ‘Electoral Offences in Nigeria, Ensuring Documentation and Effective Prosecution,’ organised by The Electoral Hub. He queried: “But is it possible then to conceptualise a compact agency with defined responsibilities and also getting the right kind of people to mount it just to focus on electoral offences? If we are able to do that, we may be able to minimise the impunity with which electoral offences are committed? But Oloja insisted on civic education on the consequences that come with elections, stressing the need to have right leaders in the right places to run the system effectively.

These developments, the Bank said have started to raise the spectre of stagflation as the increase in energy prices over the past two years has been the largest since the 1973 oil crisis. “The resulting increase in food and energy prices is taking a significant human and economic toll – and it will likely stall progress in reducing poverty. “Commodity markets are under tremendous pressure, with some commodity prices reaching all-time highs in nominal terms,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist in the World Bank’s Prospects Group. The sharp rise in input prices, such as energy and fertilizers, could lead to a reduction in food production particularly in developing economies. Building his argument solely on the “theoretics” of international law, while neglecting the extra-legal weight of historical and circumstantial facts/evidence, makes his position misleading and lacking in depth. The reality is while Western Europe boasts the finest model of domestic democracy, anyone is disillusioned to think or believe international relations revolve around international law, democracy and its ideals of sovereignty. In the international theatre, the levers of international relations and foreign policy revolve around the pistons of economic and/or military might — “mightocracy” — rather than democracy. In essence, when nations interact, the basis is not altruism or international law but strategic national interests wherein politico-economic and/or military might is the de facto factor. A national threat that surpasses the weight of an encyclopaedia of sanctions.
