Airline operators to shut down operations from Monday, May 9, as cost of aviation fuel hits N700 per litreNigeria’s airlines under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have announced their plans to shut down flight operations over what they called astronomical hike in the price of aviation fuel. “Overtime, aviation fuel price (JetA1) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. No airline in the world can absorb this kind of sudden shock from such an astronomical rise over a short period. While aviation fuel worldwide is said to cost about 40 per cent of an airline’s operating cost globally, the present hike has shut up Nigeria’s operating cost to about 95 per cent. The statement, which was signed by the president of AON, Alhaji Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina and eight other operators, was sent to the minister of aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

Lagos State government has again placed an indefinite suspension on the entire ad-hoc teams of the Committee on Removal of Abandoned Vehicles (RAVC) operating in the 20 local councils and 37 Local Council Development Area (LCDAs) in Lagos State with immediate effect. A statement by the Ministry of Transport on Friday said the suspension which was contained in a directive issued to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde by the Governor of Lagos State was as a result of several complaints of extortion and harassment of members of the public by RAVC, which is embarrassing the state government despite several reviews conducted on the operational guidelines of the team. The directive warned that any ad-hoc team found operating after this notice will be handed over to the law enforcement agencies for trial and prosecution in accordance with the law of the state as captured in the Traffic Sector Reform Law (TSRL) 2018. The directive while requesting the general public to take note of the order, also advise abandoned vehicles owners which hitherto pose as environmental nuisances, security and traffic impediment to remove them from the roads as this directive is not an excuse for negligence of the Traffic Laws of the state. It would be recalled that Removal of Abandoned Vehicles Committee, (RAVC) earlier suspension was lifted on December 30, 2021 in view of several appraisal and review of the operational guidelines of the team by the state government.

Seven soldiers and four back-up troops have been killed in two ambushes in Burkina Faso’s troubled north, the army said. The ambushes were staged by “terrorists,” according to the army, using a term to signify jihadist groups active in Burkina Faso’s north. Unrest linked to jihadist groups also plagues Burkina Faso’s West African neighbours Mali and Niger. Recruits are given two weeks’ military training and then work alongside the army, typically carrying out surveillance, information-gathering or escort duties. On April 8, 12 soldiers and four VDP members were hit in an attack in northern Burkina.

For a second time, France president Emmanuel Macron will be formally inaugurated into the office tomorrow, May 7, after defeating his far-right challenger Marine Le Pen, on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Le Pen took over the party founded by her father Jean-Marie Le Pen in 2011 in a bid to make it electable. These underpinnings, Ugwu said, support strong anti-immigration and nationalist policies, which they believe would prioritise and protect the French identity. “Finding a compromise in leading an inclusive government may see the French President take more stringent positions on sensitive items like immigration,” he said. On the implication of a second term for Africa, Akinterinwa explained that before the election, France had not been doing very well in Africa.

Misleading claims suggesting that more than 1,200 people died after suffering adverse reactions to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine have once again been spread on social media, Newsweek has reported. The phrase “Pfizer documents” became a top trending topic on Twitter, thanks in part to a tweet posted by Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who previously had her personal Twitter account permanently suspended for “repeated violations” of the social media site’s COVID-19 misinformation policy. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, (VAERS) which is operated by the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tracks reports of adverse issues related to the vaccine. ALSO READ FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNEResponding to the false claims circulating on social media, Irish cancer researcher Dr. David Robert Grimes tweeted: “Why is Pfizer trending? Full Fact ruled the claim as false as the data does not mean that one in 17 people who received the Pfizer vaccines “died shortly afterward” as was being claimed.

Zakat is an exceptionally remarkable institution and major pillar of Islam just like the five daily prayers (salat), the Ramadan fast and holy pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina (hajj). Know they not that God doth accept repentance from His votaries and receives their gifts of charity and He the Oft- Returning Most-Merciful” (Quran 9:103-104). Many parts of England are holding no election at all. In other areas there is a “unitary” council, being elected in its entirety. There are also four new councils, although two consist of single-tier councils replacing two-tier arrangements: North Somerset and North Yorkshire. In all of these cases the new councils come into effect in 2023 with the councillors elected this year. Lastly, there are frequent changes in ward boundaries and the number of councillors per ward, to maintain equality of representation.
