The second observation I would like to make is this, I am very glad to note that there is almost a meeting of minds between the government and the opposition on the vital importance of agricultural development in our economy. Minister of Finance in the course of his speech, that Government is still regrettably untutored as to what is meant by agricultural development; what its proper role in this basic development should be, and the tremendous fillip which the development of agriculture could give to our economy. I quote with your permission: ‘No investment by Nigeria herself could yield greater dividends nor contribute more effectively to her economy and industrial development. Minister of Finance has quoted the passage which suggests that Lord Netherthorpe is thinking more of our export produce than of the entire range of our agricultural economy. Investment in agricultural improvement and agricultural education could increase Nigeria’s yield, yet investment in agriculture is inadequate and is rarely in the public eye.

Introduction:The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an ambitious five-year national strategic plan aimed at revitalizing potato production within the country, spanning from 2023 to 2028. Evaluating the Strategy:While the launch of this strategic plan is a timely and encouraging step, some analysts express skepticism regarding its specificity. The plan lacks clear targets in terms of the precise volume of potato production it intends to achieve over the next five years. Aiming Higher:If executed effectively, this strategic plan has the potential to elevate Nigeria from its current position within Africa’s potato producers. Conclusion:The unveiling of the five-year strategic plan to boost potato production in Nigeria is a commendable move by the government.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal filed by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji seeking to nullify the election of the governor of Enugu state, Dr. Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Enugu State. The apex Court upheld the decisions of the Enugu state governorship election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal, maintaining that since the appellants’ brief was found to be invalid, the invalidity also naturally affected the appeal in respect of which the appeal was filed. The court also held that Nnaji failed to explain why the invalid process he filed should be relied upon to invalidate Mbah’s victory. Nnaji, who polled 14,575 votes against Mbah’s 160,895 votes to come a distant fourth in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Enugu state, had wanted the court to nullify Mbah’s election and declare him governor of the state. Nnaji maintained that he was the only one qualified to run for the election and should therefore be declared the winner.
