House of Representatives is expected to commence debate on the general principles of a bill which seeks to provide for the engagement of senior retired Army Officers. The private member bill sponsored by Hon. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi seeks to amend the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004, proposed the engagement as Consultants, of Senior Compulsorily Retired Officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces to provide training and guidance to serving officers and for related matters. According to him, the affected Officers were compulsorily retired by reason of the appointment by the President as a Chief of Defence Staff or a Service Chief. The bill which passed through First Reading is expected to be gazetted for Second Reading by the House Committee on Rules and Business chaired by Hon.

The only means for military personnel to gain political power is through coups and that is what some West African countries are currently experiencing. That scenario is a signal to the presidents of some African countries; the military have been agonizing over so many security problems. The rise of military juntas in West African countries can be halted when the democratic system functions well. But this is not reflected in what people are experiencing in many African countries. West African leaders are expected to put round pegs in round holes if they actually want democratic rule to stand forever in their respective countries.

President Bola Tinubu has announced the approval of N25,000 provisional allowance for junior federal workers over the next six months. “For the next six months, the average low-grade worker shall receive an additional N25,000 per month,” Tinubu announced during his maiden Independence Day address to Nigerians. “There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, in a letter on Friday, asked its members to join the strike. In Zamfara state, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have confirmed that the planned strike action remains inevitable. Addressing journalists, NLC Chairperson Comrade Sani Halliru said the planned strike remains inevitable as all affiliate unions are directed to participate without fail. They should be prepared, as it may escalate to a protest,” the NLC chairperson revealed. “I am optimistic that there is going to be total compliance as we have mobilised our people from the grassroots level and they have agreed to join the strike,” the TUC Chairman said. Comrade Mudi noted that the NLC and TUC will operate as one entity during the industrial action.

The Federal Government is currently engaging the World Bank on a fresh $1.5bn loan, findings by Sunday PUNCH have shown. The World Bank is Nigeria’s biggest multilateral creditor, with the country owing about $14.51bn as of June 30, 2023. Further breakdown shows that Nigeria has a total domestic debt of N54.13tn and total external debt of N33.25tn. “Talking about external borrowing, let me clarify that this year’s budget has room for a new external borrowing of about N1.7tn. A development economist, Aliyu Ilias, told Sunday PUNCH that with the currency devaluation, the external debt burden would likely double.

A former top official with a Binghamton area nonprofit dedicated to helping Parkinson’s patients maintain a high quality of life has been charged with stealing over $50,000 from the group. Binghamton-based New York State Police Friday charged Stacie M. Congdon, 48, of Windsor with second-degree grand larceny. State police allege Congdon stole more than $50,000 from Punch Out Parkinson's Inc. while she served as treasurer and president of the organization. Investigators accuse Congdon of making unauthorized withdrawals from the Punch Out Parkinson's savings and checking accounts between April 2022 and May 2023. Since 2016, the organization's "Rock Steady" boxing has helped more than 100 people in the Southern Tier of New York state and northern Pennsylvania, according to the program's website.
