The Federal Government yesterday called on governors of the 19 states with confirmed cases of diphtheria to reintroduce face mask-wearing at public gatherings. It said the advice was necessary because the confirmed cases had soared to 8,406. “Our records have shown that most of the confirmed cases of diphtheria in the country were unvaccinated against diphtheria. “Accordingly, I would like to call on governors of the affected states to institute face-covering requirements, such as facemasks, in public gatherings. According to him, in recent months, the government has launched rapid and comprehensive vaccination campaigns across the affected states.

There are medical situations where water becomes an enemy and one of such is when an individual suffers water intoxication. Water intoxication also called water poisoning, is the disruption of brain function due to drinking too much water. While every cell and organ in the body needs water to function properly, excessive water consumption can lead to water intoxication. Over-hydration and water intoxication happens when an individual drinks more water than the kidneys can get rid of via urine. Water intoxication is not likely to happen unless someone drinks a large volume of water within a short period of time and water intoxication results from the swelling of cells especially brain cells which increase pressure inside the skull increases.

Police in the Indian capital, Delhi, have raided the homes of several prominent journalists and authors in connection with an investigation into the funding of the news website NewsClick. Officials are reportedly investigating allegations that NewsClick got illegal funds from China – a charge it denies. Started in 2009, NewsClick is an independent news and current affairs website which is known to be critical of the government. Among those who have been reportedly raided on Tuesday are the website’s editor Prabir Purkayastha, journalists Abhisar Sharma, Aunindyo Chakravarty and Bhasha Singh, popular satirist Sanjay Rajoura and historian Sohail Hashmi. A vocal critic of the government, Mr Rajoura has worked on satirical videos for NewsClick in the past.

Troops of the Joint Task Force, South-East, code-named Operation UDO KA II, have cleared four notorious camps of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliates, Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State. During the clearance, the troops neutralised two IPOB/ESN members, and four criminals were arrested. The army spokesman said that during the clearance operation, troops encountered many Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) deployed en route to the camps. “These were evident from many fresh and old corpses discovered while clearing the entire camps. “Operation UDO KA II will continue combating crime and criminality in accordance with the extant rules and regulations guiding its operations.

Evergrande is the world’s most heavily indebted property developer and is at the centre of a property market crisis that is slowing down China’s economic growth. Top Premier League club Chelsea plan to buy Victor Osimhen in January, according to a very credible source. Osimhen, 24, still has two years left on his Napoli contract and even though there is no buy-out clause on this contract, Chelsea will have to break the bank to sign him. The pilot, launched today, Monday, is a part of the Project Guardian initiative run by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The Project Guardian initiative aims to facilitate faster settlement, greater operational efficiency, and more effective cross-border distribution for capital market instruments on digital asset networks. Project Guardian was announced by MAS back in May 2022, with the aim of establishing "best practices and technical standards" in the financial ecosystem. Currently, a pilot is being carried out within Project Guardian on a repurchasing agreement (repo) with natively issued digital bonds.
