The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, on Thursday, said it was set to provide six million barrels of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery. But in what could be described as a reaction to the report, sources at the NNPCL stated that the oil firm was set to deliver six million barrels of crude oil to the refinery in December. Section 109 of the Petroleum Industry Act (2021) stipulates domestic crude oil supply obligations to refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, NNPCL refineries in Port-Harcourt, Warri, Kaduna and modular refineries. The NNPCL has already taken an equity stake in the Dangote refinery and will start supplying crude oil to the facility. Also, industry sources stated that the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, had yet to receive the required volumes of crude oil needed to produce refined products.

The Holy Qur’an, Fath, 48:29 says, “Muhammad is the Apostle Of God; and those who are With him are strong Against Unbelievers, (but) Compassionate amongst each other. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because most of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. Like almost every major prophet before him, Muhammad fought shy of serving as the transmitter of God’s word sensing his own inadequacy. Whereupon Muhammad is said to have announced, ‘An eclipse is a phenomenon of nature. But if it is God you worshiped, He lives forever.’”May Almighty Allah continue to shower His blessings and mercy on Prophet Muhammad.

I have been resisting the urge for a marvellous time now to comment openly on the current state of Nigeria, and particularly on the future of Nigeria. And in what and how many ways and times beyond our conscious perception of them have we done so? On Friday, August 4 this year, this column dwelt on the need for us to befriend silence in Nigeria. Everything then came to me in the floating noon dream of a life in our country. I was again transported to a floating dream of a life in our country – but this time it was a midnight floating dream.

The current state of the Nigerian power sector characterised by tariff subsidy mostly benefits the relatively rich as more rich people are connected and consume more electricity, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. Meanwhile; in comparison of end-user electricity tariffs in the Economies of West African States member countries, NERC said the end-user tariff in Nigeria is lower than electricity tariff in most others. Available data on electricity tariffs in West Africa revealed that the average electricity tariff in Nigeria in 2021 was US$0.14/kWh and was relatively lower than the average electricity tariff in most ECOWAS countries; The NERC said the relatively low electricity tariff in Nigeria was partly due to the tariff subsidy provided by the Federal Government and the relatively cheaper gas price to the power sector in Nigeria. “End user tariff subsidy in Nigeria is pro-rich as top-income group consumes more electricity than low-income group, thereby benefiting more from subsidy than the lower income earners,” the report added. The end-user tariffs vary by each Disco and depict a general increase between 2019-2022.

The Presidential Power Initiative of the Federal Government is removing constraints in the power sector and making sure that more electricity is produced, generated and transmitted to end users, operators in the industry have stated. They stated that though the industry still had its shortcomings, the introduction of the PPI had helped in boosting power supply. In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari established the FGN Power Company as a Special Purpose Vehicle to deliver the Presidential Power Initiative in partnership with Siemens. The PPI aims to enable the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry to achieve commercial autonomy by facilitating investments in critical infrastructure to support power delivery and service to Nigerians. Speaking at briefing, the Coordinator, NESI Golf, Adetunji Adeyeye, an industry operator, said, “I’m privileged to know what has happened in the power sector in the last 10 years.

United States President, Joe Biden wants Congress to quickly pass billions of dollars in new aid for both Israel and Ukraine, but the Republican-controlled lower chamber on Thursday is set to consider a bill that puts Kyiv on the back burner. Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress want to promptly adopt military aid for Israel, a long-standing US partner at war with Hamas. Washington is Kyiv’s biggest military backer, having committed tens of billions of dollars since Russia invaded in February 2022. The situation is drastically different in the Democrat-controlled Senate, where most Republicans have voiced support for boosting aid to Ukraine. Aware that war fatigue is growing in some US political circles, Biden has decided to couple his aid request for Ukraine — over $61 billion — with that for Israel, around $14 billion.

He however, lauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo for the audacious step taken to shut down the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
