On May 26, 2023, the erstwhile President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR assented to the Arbitration and Mediation Act, 2023 (the “AMA” or “Act”) which has now repealed the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1988 (the “ACA”). The Act now mandates the courts to stay proceedings commenced in breach of the arbitration agreement unless the court finds that the agreement is void, inoperative or incapable of being performed. It provides that; the requirement for an arbitration agreement to be in writing can now be satisfied by an “electronic communication” that is accessible to be usable for subsequent reference. Implying that, if an electronic communication is readily accessible and can be used for future reference, it fulfills the criteria that an arbitration agreement must be in writing. as means to satisfy the mandatory requirement of a written arbitration agreement.

Apple Allegedly Testing iPhone 16 Pro Prototype With Hole-Punch Display
iPhone 16 series with at least four models — iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max — is likely to launch in late 2024, but we are already seeing multiple leaks about the upcoming lineup. NSCDC parades nine over breach of peace, theft in Gombe
No fewer than nine suspects were on Sunday paraded by the Gombe State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps over varying offences. NITP advocates creation of regional planning commission
The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners has urged the Federal Government to establish an urban and regional planning commission. It also called on the government to create the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning, to provide town planners the opportunity to deliver their full potential. Speaking at an event to commemorate World Town Planners Day in Abuja recently, the NITP President, Nathaniel Atebije, emphasised the role of urban and regional planning in defining the shape, structure, components and size of cities and communities. He said, “There is an urgent need for the Federal Government to establish the urban and regional planning commission, as well as the Ministry of Urban and Regional Planning to provide town planners the opportunity to deliver their full potential and create livable, resilient, sustainable cities. He reiterated that benefits abound in the implementation of town planning policies, some of which included the correction of errors in land uses in the past.

CBN moves against dollar speculators, hoarders as naira depreciates
A source in the apex bank said the speculators and hoarders are sabotaging the government’s efforts aimed at stabilising the naira against the dollar. Government’s efforts to stop the depreciation of the naira received a significant boost in the last two weeks when the naira appreciated significantly. Tinubu promises investors funds won’t be trapped

Dantijjo spent a whopping 11 years on the Supreme Court Bench, he must have worked with about four of five CJNs all wielding the same powers as the current CJN. If a justice of the Supreme Court could speak so lowly of the judiciary, why should ordinary citizens repose any confidence in it? If there was ever a period where we expected the public to blindly trust the Judiciary, it is long gone. Justice Dattijo Muhammad, JSC (Rtd), recently made a statement at his valedictory that raises a jurisprudential question on securing public trust and justice. My humble position here is, it is better that the Judiciary, including the Supreme Court, be perceived as a homogeneous entity that serves the interest of all.

Kidnapped Bayelsa INEC officer regains freedom
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday announced that one of its Supervisory Presiding Officers, who was abducted at the Amassoma jetty in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on the eve of the governorship election, has been released. A statement signed by the Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC office, Bayelsa State, Wilfred Ifogah, said the freed victim was doing fine. Ifogah said, “The Independent National Electoral Commission, Bayelsa State Office, is pleased to inform stakeholders and concerned citizens in Nigeria that the INEC SPO earlier abducted on the eve of the election has been freed and is doing fine. “The Commission wishes to thank all those who acted and showed concern in ensuring the safe release and the return of the officer.”Earlier, INEC had reported the abduction of one of its SPOs in Bayelsa State on Friday. “INEC also reports that its SPO assigned to Registration Area – 06 (Ossiama) in Sagbama LGA was abducted while waiting to board a boat at Amassoma jetty.
