I pay homage to a self-effacing general of the Nigerian army who passed on December 19, 2023. My subject is General Chris Alli, a former Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian army. Our subject was part of the military junta by professional calling. He focused on the primacy of God in our lives, the transient nature of power, and the illegitimacy of military rule. It is to be noted that Alli had been the military governor of Plateau State of Nigeria from August 1985 to 1986 under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, says the team is ready to take on Mozambique in the AFCON Round of 16. Nigeria, the three-time AFCON champions, will trade tackles with Mozambique on Monday, and Osimhen says their confidence is sky-high. According to Osimhen, the Super Eagles is one of the biggest teams in Africa, and that other teams should be shivering if they’re drawn against Nigeria. “The round of 16 is going to be even tougher than the group stages, so the boys are ready to give everything. “I want it as badly as every other country that came to win it.

Midfielder Alex Iwobi says the Super Eagles cannot afford to take their foot off the gas ahead of their 2025 AFCON round-of-16 clash against Mozambique on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. While Nigeria recorded victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in Group C, Mozambique’s sole 3-2 victory over Gabon in Group F proved enough to ensure their progression. We are going to give 100 per cent and try to do our nation proud,” Iwobi told Ademola Victor TV. At the ongoing AFCON in Morocco, Iwobi has been instrumental in Nigeria’s campaign, dictating play from midfield as the Super Eagles booked a place in the round of 16. With 93 international caps, the 29-year-old is the most capped player in the current Super Eagles squad and is appearing at his third Africa Cup of Nations.

(Photo by Jim WATSON / AFP)Armed groups have intensified attacks across parts of northern Nigeria following United States air strikes targeting Islamic State-linked militants in Sokoto State. Some of the attacks were carried out on communities in Adamawa, Zamfara, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Yobe and Kano states by bandits, ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters. “Around 9pm on that day, Boko Haram invaded Mubang and Zar villages, which are close to Sambisa forest. It is a vast empty land, so Boko Haram took advantage of the ungoverned spaces to attack and kill innocent people”, he said. Inuwa added that a combined team of military and vigilante in the past guarded the area, repelling Boko Haram attacks.

Average hotel room rates in Lagos have climbed to a record N205,534, a sign of how quickly business and corporate travel is returning to Nigeria’s commercial capital, even as new hotel supply lags. The document noted that Lagos’ hospitality performance highlights how quickly demand has recovered relative to supply, particularly in prime business locations. “Average daily rates in Lagos are currently as high as they have ever been, supported by business and corporate travel and constrained supply following several years of delayed hotel deliveries,” the report stated. Broader economic backdropThe rebound in hotel rates comes amid improving macroeconomic conditions. Estate Intel said the outlook for Lagos’ hospitality market remains positive, with limited near-term supply expected to keep the sector balanced even as demand improves.

ETAI-assisted summary A recent cold front in Florida created a rare weather phenomenon known as fallstreak holes or hole punch clouds. The uniquely winter phenomenon for the Sunshine State of so-called fallstreak holes or hole punch clouds is where circular or oblong divots appear in clouds, usually revealing a bluebird sky above. But in winter, Florida clouds can be as wispy as cotton candy spooling on a cardboard cone. In one fallstreak cloud video posted by WeatherStem on Dec. 30, the cirrus cloud is visible above the altcocumulus cloud. NASA Earth Observatory senior science writer Adam Voiland wrote about fallstreak clouds when a series of them were seen off the southwest coast of Florida in January 2024.

“As I travel the world and meet leaders who have transformed their nations, one lesson is clear: lasting economic and social progress begins with national consensus,” Obi wrote. He said governments must be truthful with citizens about how tax policies affect incomes and how revenues will translate into development outcomes. “You cannot tax your way out of poverty — you must produce your way out of it,” he said. His comments come amid heightened public debate over Nigeria’s tax reforms and revenue measures. The reforms have included changes to value-added tax administration, excise duties and efforts to widen the tax net, which had taken effect this new year.
