Resident doctors to resume nationwide strike January 12
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced it will resume its total and indefinite comprehensive strike from January 12, 2026, following the Federal Government’s failure to implement agreed welfare demands. “NEC resolved to resume TICS 2.0 tagged ‘No Implementation, No Going Back’ with effect from 12th January 2026 by 12:00 am,” the statement read. The association also announced a series of protests to accompany the strike. “NEC has also directed centre-based protests from 12 to 16th January, 2026,” the statement said, adding that regional protests would follow before a national protest organised by the National Officers Committee. As of press time, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare had not issued an official response.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that US forces had captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro after launching a “large scale strike” on the South American country. There was no confirmation from Venezuela’s government of the fate of the leftist Maduro, in power since 2013. His government accused the United States of an “extremely serious military aggression” which follows a months-long campaign of increasing military and economic pressure by Trump. The defense ministry accused the United States of targeting residential areas and announced a “massive deployment” of its military resources. He also said the United States had hit and destroyed a docking area for alleged Venezuelan drug boats.

South-East governors pledge 2027 support for Tinubu
Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma, has said that governors of the region have agreed to support President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. According to him, the visit was primarily to extend New Year greetings to Governor Otti and acknowledge his efforts in governance. Responding to questions about the political implications of his visit, Uzodinma noted that interactions between elected officials naturally attract political interpretations. “President Tinubu has implemented policies that are yielding results, and that is why leaders in the South-East have resolved to support him,” Uzodinma said. Otti thanked Uzodinma for the visit and prayed for continued peace and development in Imo State and the South-East.

DPO Summoned Over Good Samaritan Extortion Claims in Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the Divisional Police Officer of the GRA Police Station, Asaba, Delta State, following allegations of extortion and intimidation involving a Nigerian man who attempted to save a dying stranger. Acting on the advice of a medical doctor he contacted, Wojuola said he rushed the unconscious man to a hospital. However, upon reporting the case at the GRA Police Station, he alleged that police officers accused him of murder and took his statement under caution. “I was taken to incident the case at GRA Police station in Asaba. My people, join me to thank God.”Reacting to the allegations, the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) confirmed that the DPO has been summoned.
