About 10 years ago, the word “sommelier” was in the middle of both a PR glow-up and an identity crisis. The latter helped introduce the word “somm” to the public, and cement a new image of the “somm” as someone who partied like an honors student—who kept up with the grades but knew how to throw down, a loose tie and an open bottle on their person any old Thursday night. Whether stodgy trad bro or trendy natty dad, whether “sommelier” or “somm,” the groups and their audiences were predominantly white, male and resource-rich, and had no problem keeping the gates closed. The somm, who became increasingly linked to natural wine, became burdened with what The New Yorker called “virtuous consumption,” while the party took its toll on the most marginalized in the group. If you wanted to locate the “somm” crew talking about skin-contact wines while shirtless at a natural wine bar, just follow the cocaine.

Sultan calls for peace prayers in Gaza, other conflict zones
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has called for prayers for peace in Gaza and other parts of the world experiencing conflict or some form of crisis. The Sultan made the call while inaugurating the Organisation of Tadamul Muslimeen Mosque on Iwo Road, Ibadan, on Thursday. In his remarks, the Sultan noted that leaders and followers alike had a duty to be their brother’s keeper and to advocate for peace and stability in society. Delivering a lecture on the occasion, the Chief Imam of Oluyole Extension, Ibadan, Alhaji Mudathir Bada, said it was a remarkable thing for one to make a promise and fulfill it. Two feared dead as police, Shi’ites clash in Kaduna
Some members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as “Shi’ites” on Thursday, stormed the street of Kaduna protesting the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine. However, the Kaduna Police Command confirmed to The PUNCH on the telephone that only one person was killed during the clash with the Shi’ite members. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, blamed the death on IMN members, whom he described as a violent sect. Hassan said, “The movement came out today, Thursday 16, November 2023, knowing fully well the ban on public procession in the state. “The public knows the Shi’ites are violent people who can never protest peacefully and everybody knows that they have been outlawed in the state.”

At least 25 dead in Chinese coal mining company fire accident
At least 25 people died in a fire on Thursday in the building of a coal mining company in the northwest Chinese province of Shanxi, Chinese news agency, Xinhua reports. More than 60 people were evacuated during the rescue efforts, which were still underway. Chinese state media reported that the fire broke out on the second floor of a five-storey building in the city of Lyuliang early in the morning. The building belonged to the Yongju coal company. Sand, dust storms frequency increasing in many world regions, UN warns
With impacts far beyond the source regions, an estimated two billion tonnes of sand and dust now enter the atmosphere every year, an amount equal in weight to 350 Great Pyramids of Giza. “Sand and dust storms (SDS) have become increasingly frequent and severe having substantial transboundary impacts, affecting various aspects of the environment, climate, health, agriculture, livelihoods and the socioeconomic well-being of individuals. The accumulation of impacts from sand and dust storms can be significant,” says Feras Ziadat, Technical Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Chair of the UN Coalition on Combating Sand and Dust Storms. “It is a costly phenomenon that wreaks havoc everywhere from Northern and Central Asia to sub-Saharan Africa.”“Sand and dust storms present a formidable challenge to achieving sustainable development. However, just as sand and dust storms are exacerbated by human activities, they can also be reduced through human actions.” While sand and dust storms (SDS) are a regionally common and seasonal natural phenomenon, the problem is exacerbated by poor land and water management, droughts, and climate change, according to UNCCD experts.
