The Science Media Centre recently highlighted the use of what it calls 'cloaked science', where technical language, difficult-to-understand graphs and charts, or seemingly scientific data are used to hide a political, ideological, or financial agenda. O'Connor advised journalists who might have questions about a study's credibility to contact the publicly-funded Science Media Centre for advice.

Russia-Ukraine war: Wagner chief calling for rebellion says he and his troops reached city in Russia
Yeveny Prigozhin posted a video of himself in Rostov-on-Don at the Russian military headquarters that oversees the fighting in Ukraine. He claimed that his forces had military facilities in the city under their control, including the airfield. It was not immediately clear how he was able to enter the southern Russian city or how many troops he had with him. The Wagner forces have played a crucial role in Russia’s war in Ukraine, succeeding in taking the city where the bloodiest and longest battles have taken place, Bakhmut. But Prigozhin has increasingly criticised Russia’s military brass, accusing it of incompetence and of starving his troops of weapons and ammunition.

Taxpayers’ Union poll shows broad support for tax bracket indexation
Two-thirds of voters across the political spectrum support adjusting tax brackets at the rate of inflation, to prevent the average tax rate from drifting higher over time. Bracket creep, also known as “fiscal drag”, refers to inflation pushing taxpayers into higher tax brackets, despite not having higher incomes in real terms. The Green Party’s proposed reform also includes 2.5% wealth tax, a 1.5% trust tax, and an increase of the corporate tax rate. Lisa Marriot, a professor of taxation at Victoria University, said the bottom personal income tax thresholds haven’t changed since 2010. Complex & consideredRobyn Walker, a tax partner at Deloitte, said any implementation of tax indexation would need to be carefully considered.

Murderer of NZ-born Police officer found
Matt Ratana. Photo: Supplied via NZ HeraldA man has been found guilty of the murder of a New Zealand-born police officer fatally shot inside a custody unit, London's Metropolitan Police says. Louis De Zoysa was convicted of murdering Matt Ratana after the shooting at a police station in Croydon, south London, in September 2020. Ratana, a long-serving police officer, was fatally injured in the incident. After Ratana's murder, the government introduced new laws to ban that kind of antique weapon.

Weekend briefing: Consumer spending holds recession at bay
The UST 10yr yield will start today rising at 3.74% and down -5 bps from yesterday but unchanged for the week. Wall Street is lower today with the S&P500 Friday session down -0.8% to push out the weekly retreat to -2.1%. The ASX200 ended its Friday session down another -1.3% to be -2.1% lower for the week. The price of gold will start today up +US$4 at US$1920/oz but down -US$37/oz or -1.9% for the week. The Kiwi dollar starts today at 61.4 USc and down a bit more than -¼c from yesterday.
