I suspect Prime Minister Hipkins is at the realist end of the spectrum of engagement with China. We are not as reliant on China as we once were on the United Kingdom, but it’s getting up there. Prime Minister Hipkins will meet with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang while in Beijing, and will also attend a World Economic Forum event in Tianjin. The war in Ukraine is in some senses good for China: a Russia bled white by its own aggression will need China to lead Fortress Eurasia.

ANZ's economists expect a 3% increase in house prices over the second-half of the year
ANZ's economists expect house prices to rise slightly in the second half of this year. "We are forecasting house prices to lift just over 3% across the second half of the year," their latest Property Focus report says. "While there are still plenty of headwinds facing the housing market, we expect the tailwinds will blow a little more strongly across the second half of the year." "While high mortgage rates are certainly suppressing demand by sucking money out of debtors' pockets, household incomes have also grown strongly because of the tight labour market," the report says. "We now see the unemployment rate rising to 4.2% by the end of the year, rather than 4.4%," the report said.

This included higher rates of deaths and serious injuries than projected and fewer safety measures rolled out across the country than had been planned. Waka Kotahi set itself the goal of at least 500km of the network with reduced speeds by last June but it only managed to change 165km. It said there were six National Land Transport Programme projects off track at this point, with two unlikely to recover by June 30. Four NZ Upgrade Programme projects were also off track, with one unlikely to recover.

NZ: Grower creates soil that sucks greenhouse gas from the air
Even a summer of “terrible” weather hasn’t dampened Jenny Lux’s enthusiasm for her organic and regenerative market garden. Today, she grows a “highly diverse” range of organic produce – from herbs and microgreens to tomatoes, chilies, silverbeet, and pumpkins. Her concern about the heating planet also led the family business to regenerative farming techniques to maximize soil health so it can absorb greenhouse gas and store it out of harm’s way. Organic crops produce far less of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide, per acre of land, than farms using synthetic fertilizer. But one study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that, even taking yield into account, organic farming comes out ahead.
