Tuesday, 4 July, 2023 - 09:30Conceived as a way of recognising the unsung heroes in our communities, Prospa’s 2023 Local Business Hero Awards celebrate Aotearoa New Zealand as a nation of small business owners. With a 40% increase in nominations from last year and over 1.74 million impressions across Neighbourly and Stuff, Prospa’s fourth annual Local Business Hero awards was a resounding success. The increased entries are a testament to the fact that Kiwis are embracing not only their local small businesses but the Prospa awards, which are going from strength to strength each year. Prospa managing director Adrienne Begbie said all the usual difficulties of being a small business had become much harder in the current economic environment. Meg has won an NZ Local Business Hero Winner Certificate, $2,500 cash, a Stuff advertising package valued at $5,000 and a Neighbourly advertising package valued at $2,500.

That's now a higher non-performing loan figure than was seen at the peak of the sharp but brief rise in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. But numerically, the peak of the pandemic surge was just under $1.2 billion of non-performing loans in July 2020. Substantial numbers of mortgage customers have still yet to roll over from reasonably favourable interest rates to the much higher rates now prevailing. "However, for households that borrowed during the period of very low interest rates between late 2020 and late 2021, current interest rates exceed some of the test rates used by banks during this period. These borrowers can now use this buffer to limit the rises in their repayments due to higher interest rates.

ASB's new one year rate is now 36 basis points higher than Kiwibank, 26 basis points higher than its Aussie bank rivals, and 85 basis points higher than Heartland Bank's market-leading rate. ASB's new two year rate is now 30 basis points higher than ANZ, 20 basis points higher than BNZ, Kiwibank and Westpac, and 59 basis points higher than Heartland's market-leading rate. Photo / ODTAll southern highways closed by the weekend’s wild weather have now re-opened as the region cleans up from the winter storm. Brockville was covered in snow yesterday. Roads around Highgate had been gritted mid-morning yesterday, but snow had since fallen and frozen on top, making conditions treacherous. “Contractors will be patrolling roads overnight and treating arterial roads with grit or a de-icing agent where required to alleviate ice and frost. “While treating the roads helps to reduce risk, drivers still need to be particularly careful in icy, winter conditions.”The council website listed eight city roads closed due to snow.

In the week ahead, the non-farm payrolls report and FOMC Minutes will be taking the headlines in the United States. The private Caixin versions have recently tended to reflect slightly better results over the past few months. Recall a week ago it was at 4.60%. The price of gold will start today at US$1920/oz and unchanged from Saturday, and a week ago. That means the TWI-5 is still at 69.8 and exactly where we were a week ago.
