In a Westpac Economic Bulletin, senior economist Satish Ranchhod said the full impact of interest rate hikes is yet to be felt. "As a result, the average mortgage rate that households are paying is set to rise by a further 150 bps." That decline has mainly been due to the 17% fall in house prices since interest rates started rising in late 2021. "Those mounting financial pressures will see per capita household spending falling by around 2% over 2023 and 2024 combined. And with household spending accounting for around 60% of total economic activity, that will be a significant drag on economic growth."

‘Evolving with its community’: New name for The Dominion PostWellington’s daily newspaper, The Dominion Post, has announced it is changing its name, removing the word dominion. It’s time for the word to go,” editor Caitlin Cherry said. After woke washing The Dominion Post, Stuff’s next move is to create woke paywalls for their woke social engineering journalism. Woke paywalls mean the rest of us can ignore them and allow the idea to die behind a paywall the way opinion does behind the NZ Herald paywall. I applaud Stuff going behind a paywall and beg then to put all their columnists behind it so Stuffcan become as irrelevant as the NZ Herald’s Paywall opinion section.

We get that on Thursday, NZ time and an increase of 3.1% is expected, down from the May 4.0% rate. This coming week we will also get central bank rate reviews from Canada on Thursday where a +25 bps rise is expected, and South Korea also on Thursday. And of course we will get our own RBNZ releasing their decision on Wednesday, and no change is expected here. This probably paves the way for another central bank policy rate hike there too on Thursday (NZT). That means the TWI-5 is now just over 70.3, little-changed from Saturday but up +50 bps in a week.

James Shaw speaks to the media following his and Marama Davidson's reaffirmation as Green party co-leaders. “We must confront climate change with the urgency and the scale that it demands - and invest in action to protect our rivers, land, forests, beaches and oceans. These are voters who had considered voting Green, with many “on the fence” current Labour supporters. Davidson said they had Labour members coming to meetings interested in pushing for more Green influence. Shaw also said in his speech, focused on climate change and the environment, he believed a National-led government would be “beholden” to Act and they would together drag back climate progress 30 years.

The Green Party will be looking to shore up its support on the second day of their AGM today. Co-leader Marama Davidson will release the Greens' election manifesto at Auckland University. NZ Herald political reporter Michael Neilson says the Greens are trying to appear more united by warning a prospective National-ACT Government would set climate change policy back by 30 years. "It did seem this year that they really want to appear focused on the election and none of these kind of messy issues that have been there in the past." LISTEN ABOVE
