The eastern Libyan government has offered Russia’s Tatneft the opportunity to build a refinery in Libya as part of efforts to attract investments to the region. According to the Libyan Observer, the offer was made during the Russia-Islamic World Forum in the republic of Tatarstan, when the eastern government’s investment minister suggested that Tatneft build a refinery in Benghazi or Tobruk. Tatneft already has operations in Libya, where last year it struck oil at a field it operates together with the National Oil Corporation in the Ghadames Basin in northern Libya. Libya has the largest proven oil reserves in Africa, with oil accounting for almost 100% of government revenues. Libya is exempted from the OPEC+ cuts because of its troubles with production growth, with fields often the target of protests and blockades by various groups.

Ralph Cassar believes the strongest message voters disillusioned by politics can give is to “vote green” because not voting does not worry the big parties. Transitioning to a more sustainable green economy is a must, he argues but insists it has to be socially just. When I ask him about the pushback towards green policies across the EU, Cassar blames this on the European People’s Party that abandoned the Green Deal when it saw the popular mood on the continent shift. In Malta, the PN was proposing in parliament a motion to declare a climatic emergency but in the European Parliament the EPP was doing otherwise. People should choose green because it is the colour of progressives and environmentalists in this election.

Labour’s concise manifesto for next June’s MEP elections offers a small island perspective on economic themes, committing its MEPs to bring local realities to the European table. From shipping to climate change, Labour’s MEPs will have the task to put Malta’s smallness on the EU agenda. However, the manifesto conspicuously omits several themes important to European socialists, including the rule of law and feminism. Peace and love in the age of aggressionThe Labour manifesto references Ukraine twice and describes the Russian invasion as “an aggression” once. However, Labour’s manifesto falls short of any forceful reproach of Israel’s contempt for international law.
