The judge's ruling followed a recommendation by public prosecutor Ekaterini Tsironi for the case to be dismissed because the trawler sank outside Greek territorial waters. “The shipwreck clearly occurred in international waters and … the jurisdiction of the Greek courts cannot be established," she said. A coast guard patrol boat and passing merchant ships were near the vessel for hours but did not manage to prevent the massive loss of life. Several survivors have said the capsizing happened after the Greek coast guard attempted to tow the ship, an accusation Greek authorities deny. Pylos is the Greek town that was closest to where the trawler sank, and the shipwreck has become known by that name.

Greek prosecutor recommends dismissing charges in migrant shipwreck case
Outside the courthouse, a small group of protesters clashed with riot police as the proceedings got underway. The protesters could be heard inside the packed courtroom as presiding judge Eftichia Kontaratou read out the names of the nine defendants. Defense lawyer Spyros Pantazis earlier asked the court to declare itself incompetent to try the case, arguing that the sinking occurred outside Greek territorial waters. Lawyers from Greek human rights groups are representing the nine Egyptians, who deny the smuggling charges. Authorities say the defendants were identified by other survivors and the indictments are based on their testimonies.

Western experts warn Europe against the risk of dealing with Haftar
A report by the British newspaper “Daily Express” said that Western experts warned that Khalifa Haftar, who is supported by Russia, poses an increasing danger to Europe, including his use of illegal immigration to put pressure on Europe.
