Addressing the conference by videoconference, Dr. Adesina urged Germany and other G7 countries to support a $1.5 billion African Emergency Food Production plan developed jointly by the Bank and the African Union to help African countries avert a looming food crisis. “While the African Development Bank has mobilized $1.3 billion of the $1.5 billion needed for the African Emergency Food Production Plan, we have a financing gap of $200 million. We must prioritize food production. We have the technology to feed Africa – Africa does not need to hold bowls in hand to beg for food. Africa needs seeds in the ground to produce food for itself.”The African Emergency Food Production Facility will provide 20 million smallholder farmers with certified seeds.

By Togba-Nah Tipoteh, [email protected]Although the Constitution of Liberia calls for the building of sustainable democracy in Liberia, where the Will of the People of Liberia prevails, the reality in Liberia is that autocracy, the will of the few powers that be, prevails. It is under this violation that there is poverty generation instead of poverty alleviation in Liberia. Poverty generation prevails in Liberia because the powers that be see poverty as being in their interest, despite their detractive policy statements and slogans. How can Liberia get the good State management where Democracy prevails over Autocracy? How can Liberia get the good State management where poverty alleviation prevails over poverty generation?

MONROVIA – Coalition of Concern Youth Movement (CCYM) a civil society group, has called on the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), the Liberia National Students Union (LINSU), and the Mano River Union Youth Parliament (MRUYP) to define their actual roles and expansionary vision as youth and students institutions in Liberia. He stated that in 1958, 1978, and 2003, the then generation of youth and student leaders with a more strong spirit and progressive desire didn’t propagate the message for the establishment of the Federation of Liberia Youth, the Liberia National Student Union, and Mano River Union Youth Parliament only because of what they could get for their stomachs. According to him, Liberia’s youth lack a major voice and a lost representation since leaders of these institutions have aligned themselves to trade the issues that would give them employment after serving these positions. According to the Coalition of Concern Youth Movement, these institutions have failed to attach values by adhering to policy and constitutional mandates and to create close coordination supported by more robust programs and campaigns focused on transformational results rather than just seeing the positions for a mere bluff. With deep heart, we cautioned that these institutions will invest in innovative and stand-alone ventures that fill the gaps in the youth development indexes and turn themselves into household names once again for the right reason,” he noted.

"This risk [of postponing the 2022 Census] will extend to calling into question the constitutionality of the elections in 2023, as well as ... the constitutionality of the entire government." -- CummingsThe Alternative National Congress has threatened to sue members of the Senate for infringing on the constitutional rights of Liberia for postponing the conduct of the census in violation of Article 39 of the Constitution. "The Liberian Constitution mandates the conduct of a census every 10 years, which amongst other important reasons, is needed for economic planning. And just before the March deadline, it was announced by LISGIS (Liberia's statistics agency) that they would finally be ready to conduct the census in October 2022. For Cummings, such a dangerous scenario should be avoided as it comes with consequences for Liberia's peace, security, and democracy.

But after a series of meetings with the Ministries of Health, Finance and Development Planning, and Civil Service Agency, an understanding has been reached with the health workers to immediately address concerns of 800 health workers in hard to reach counties. As part of that process, approximately more than 800 health workers in hard-to-reach counties’ salaries issues are being addressed and they experienced changes,” said the Southeastern Health Workers Network of Liberia in a statement. The 400 health workers’ strike paralyzed operations at the various public hospitals in the southeast — making it harder for patients to receive treatment during the period. Dr. Ketteh clarified that the salaries of health workers of the same qualifications are not based on qualification but also on experience. He urged health workers to report colleagues who are not working to be replaced by volunteers.
