Gabon’s deposed President Ali Bongo Ondimba has solicited help, hours after he was put under house arrest by members of his presidential guard in an ongoing coup attempt on Wednesday. Bongo, who confirmed his arrest in a video circulating on social media and verified by Al Jazeera, called on calls on citizens to “make noise” after the coup attempt. The coup leaders said his family and his doctors were with him in his home. They also said the election results were cancelled, all borders closed until further notice and state institutions dissolved. The state institutions they declared dissolved included the government, the senate, the national assembly, the constitutional court and the election body.

The officers said they were closing Gabon’s borders until further notice and dissolving state institutions. The announcement on the Gabon 24 channel came shortly after the Gabonese Elections Centre declared that Mr Ondimba, who has been in power for 14 years, had won a third term in elections held on Saturday. “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime,” said one of the officers. “To this end, the general elections of 26 August 2023 and the truncated results are cancelled,” he said. Gabon’s government announced a nationwide curfew and cut off internet access on Saturday evening as voting in major national elections for new local leaders, national legislators and the next president was wrapping up.

Bomi County Senator Morris Saytumah has responded to a recent situation in Bomi County where he was booed by people in the crowd at a political rally called by President George Weah, as if it were déjà vu. In his words, he experienced a similar situation when he ran for the position of senator. By Henry Karmo ([email protected])Last weekend, it was reported that scores of citizens in Bomi County rejected President Weah’s proposal to endorse incumbent Senator Morris Saytumah as the candidate supported by the ruling CDC for the Senate seat in Bomi County. This situation feels like déjà vu because they did a similar thing to me in 2014 when I ran for senator. Senator Saytumah originally won the Bomi County senate seat in 2012 as a candidate representing the Unity Party, which was the ruling party at the time.
