MONROVIA – In reference to an objection raised against Mr. Teklo Maxwell Grigsby II as a representative candidate for District #1 Sinoe County, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has scheduled a hearing to be conducted by Atty. Winston-Doe is seeking to deny Mr. Grigsby the opportunity to contest in the upcoming elections. He eventually tendered his resignation more than two months later on June 1, 2023. The NEC hearing office will now carefully consider the allegations and evidence presented by both parties to determine the eligibility of Mr. Teklo Maxwell Grigsby II as a representative candidate for District #1 Sinoe County. The commission will ensure a fair and thorough investigation in line with its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

Liberia: Presidential Candidates Cummings and Gongloe Commit to War Crimes Court
MONROVIA, Liberia—Two of Liberia’s leading candidates for president have committed to establishing a war and economic crimes court to try alleged leading perpetrators of Liberia’s civil wars if elected in the October elections. Cummings insisted the court will be one of the priorities of his administration, pledging to mobilize everyone involved with the issue. Ledgerhood Rennie, Liberia’s Information Minister, declined requests for comment on whether President Weah would implement a court in a second term. Activists have long blamed Johnson, war time leader of a breakaway faction of Taylor’s National Patriotic Front, for trading his support to presidential candidates in return for a commitment to block a court. Weah urged alleged war perpetrators to support the court to clear their names of charges against them.

Over 1,800 ‘terrorist attacks’ in West Africa in 2023: ECOWAS
The West African bloc is set to discuss strengthening a regional standby force to tackle insecurity and threats of coups. Omar Touray told the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday that half a million people in the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are refugees and nearly 6.2 million are internally displaced. He said the region is worried about the resurgence of the military, with three countries – Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea – under military rule. “The reversal of democratic gains runs parallel to insecurity that West Africa and the Sahel have been facing for some time now,” said Touray, a former Gambian foreign minister. Simao appealed for “robust and decisive support” for the ECOWAS action plan to stem insecurity in the Sahel.

Liberia: Minister Sonii Extols Bea Mountain for Constructing TVET School in Kinjor
KINJOR, Grand Cape Mount – The Minister of Education Prof. Ansu Dao Sonii has extolled the Management of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) for the construction of a modern Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) School in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County. The TVET School when opened will be run and managed by the Government of Liberia with support from the company. It is a government school provided by the company for the people to be administered by the Government. Minister Sonii further encouraged citizens of Grand Cape Mount County to take full ownership of the TVET School constructed by BMMC. He used the occasion to call on residents of Kinjor and Cape Mount at large to help maintain the school facility.
