Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – The Liberian delegation to the annual pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia has arrived safely. According to a dispatch from the Embassy of Liberia in Riyadh, a special flight conveying 127 pilgrims from Liberia landed safely at the King Adul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The flight took off from the Roberts International Airport Wednesday concluding attempts to ensure Liberia was represented at annual pilgrims to the Holy City. The pilgrims were received on arrival by officials of the Embassy as well as an array of Saudi officials from the Ministry of Hajj and Ummurah of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Performing Hajj is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, and as such, every Muslim who has the financial means and good health is expected to perform hajj at least once in one’s lifetime.

Liberia’s senior national team comprising home-based players has moved to a camp at the George Weah Technical Center, ahead of their match against Senegal in the 2022 African Nations Championship. The 2022 CHAN will be the 7th edition of the African Nations Championship, a biennial football tournament organized by CAF exclusively featuring players from the respective national championships. Liberia will host Senegal on July 24 in the first leg at the refurbished SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville before traveling to Senegal for the return leg. The aggregate winner from the match will face Guinea in the final round of the WAFU Zone A qualifiers. The Executive Protection Service (EPS) officer, Patrick Kollie, charged for shooting to death a civilian Valentine Johnson made his first appearance on July 6, at the Monrovia City Court to face his murder charge. The court records alleged that after the shooting incident, defendant Kollie immediately got in his White Hyundai Sedan vehicle and fled the scene in total disregardto the existence of human life. When the defendant reached the area, he allegedly came across some criminals who tried to molest him by impeding his movement, the court documents quoted the defendant. As soon as the criminals realized that the defendant had an arm, they took off to their heel and passed by an approaching motorbike, the court record alleged. “After the defendant realized that he had hit the wrong person, he (defendant Kollie) immediately got into his vehicle and speedily left the crime scene,” the record alleged.

Barclayville – Over 4,000 residents of Alawala City in Dweken, and its surroundings in District #2, Grand Kru County have begun communicating with their loved ones in and out of the county, following the construction of an Access Universal Tower. The Liberia National Police, Maryland County detachment, has arrested suspect Samuel Toe, a notorious criminal following a rigorous search launched in Pleebo, Maryland county. Samuel Toe was arrested on June 26 at around 5:00 p.m. Kaydor noted that suspect Toe is undergoing investigation by the crime services department of the LNP in the county. On their 33rd day sitting, the Liberian Senate yesterday unanimously voted to pass the “Local Government Tax and Revenue Act of 2021, amending the Liberia Revenue Code of 2011 as well as the “Revenue Sharing Law of Liberia, 2021." The Local Government Tax and Revenue Act of 2021, which requires an amendment to the Liberia Revenue Code of 2011, will enable the central government to support its goal of sustainable decentralization and promote an independent revenue collection and retention process for local governments. According to the report, this Revenue sharing will be based on formulas to be recommended by the Local Government Fiscal Board and enacted into law by the Legislature. Meanwhile, the Senate has also voted to amend the Small Arms Commission Act and establish the Liberia National Commission on Arms, but removing Tenure Status and Semi-Financial Autonomy as contained in the proposed Act submitted by President George Manneh Weah. The decision by the Senate to amend the Act, followed a report from the Joint Committee on Defense, Security, Intelligence & Veteran Affairs as well as Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims & Petitions, recommending an amendment of the Act creating the Small Arms Commission to provide for the Liberia National Commission on Arms.

President Bush then deferred the enforced departure of those Liberians originally granted TPS. President Obama, in successive memoranda, extended that grant of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to March 31, 2018. That legislation, however, did not provide for continued employment authorization past January 10, 2021. Through my memorandum of January 20, 2021 (Reinstating Deferred Enforced Departure for Liberians), DED was subsequently reinstated through June 30, 2022, in order to permit employment authorization for eligible Liberians while they made their applications for adjustment of status under the LRIF provision. The Secretary of Homeland Security shall also provide for the prompt issuance of new or replacement employment authorization documents in appropriate cases.

Voinjama, Lofa County –– There has been a low turnout of voters in many polling centers like Foya, Voinjama, Zorzor, Vahun, as residents of Lofa County elect a new senator today. Also, at Salayea polling places there was also low turnout of voters, accreditation and voting commenced at 8:00am. Report shows that at Vahun, an isolated district in Lofa County, the exercise started at 8:45am and was characterized by the late arrival of voting materials and low turn out of voters. Six candidates are vying to fill the vacant senatorial seat of Lofa County as contained on the National Elections Commission (NEC) list. Only one candidate would triumph at the end of the poll which has a total of 187,775 registered voters, according to the 2020 statistics of the NEC, with the lower part of the county accounting for 100,278 registered voters, or 53.40 per cent of the total number of registered voters.

“The Military Police report recommends Sergeant Tucker be charged for Article 80 (Attempt to Commit Murder), Article 128 (Aggravated Assault). It is a crime to take away life, it does not matter if you commit suicide,” Collins told journalists. “The investigation reveals that Sergeant Tucker aimed the AK 47 rifle at his colleague Sergeant Edwin Sanders (injured) when he was being confronted. However, Sergeant Sanders, considering the situation, decided to persuade and discourage Sergeant Tucker from taking such actions. But seeing the determination of Sergeant Tucker to shoot him he decided to take off, knowing he was vulnerable without a weapon.

OK FM reporter visited the UL Capitol Hill campus on Monday and observed the influx of students pouring in to attend classes, but could not see any instructors. Some of the classes are yet to be renovated, as water sets on the floor of some class rooms. Despite the lack of classes on Monday, the UL Faculty Association which did not show up for classes, promised to host a General Assembly on this Wednesday to review the decision reached with authorities of the UL. The Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Davidetta Brown Lassanah has officially declared today, June 28, 2022 as polling day for the Lofa County Senatorial By-election, and therefore assured of free and fair election which will free of biases, but rather transparency will be demonstrated in the process. Polling centers at various locations in the county opened as early as 6am today, as voters go out to elect the candidate of their choice; six candidates have registered to contest for the slog left vacant due to the failure of Senator-elect, Brownie Samukai who was rejected due to his alleged criminal charges leveled against him. Mr. Samukai was denied taken seat in the Senate after he won the last election for the county due to his alleged involvement of misapplication of monies belonging to the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Liberia, a situation that led to him being rejected. The public, especially citizens of the county will today decide as to who to elect amongst six candidates Sumo G. Kupee, Galakpai Kortaimai, Joseph K. Jallah, Mariamu B.
