Liberia: Boakai Takes Early Lead in Presidential Race

Boakai, the opposition candidate and former Vice President, has taken an early lead in the presidential race. As of now, Boakai is ahead of the incumbent president, George Weah, by 1,438 votes. The results are based on 16 polling places in two counties, Bomi and Montserrado, which account for approximately 0.27% of the total 5,890 polling places across the country. Boakai received 3,119 votes, whereasWeah secured 1,681 votes. The NEC will continue to release additional provisional results within the legally mandated 15-dayperiod for announcing the final election results.

As early as 4am local time on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 eligible voters including first time voters woke up from their beds to secure their respective spots in a queue in readiness to vote for the person of their choice including the presidency and members of both the houses of Senate and Representatives in this much anticipated elections. During the tour early this morning in central Monrovia, Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, head of the ECOWAS delegation, and Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security who led the team including Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, ECOWAS Representative to Liberia during tour of various polling centers urged Liberians to be peaceful during these elections in the interest of their country. Liberians themselves who stood in queue to vote for the person of their choice speaking to the GNN poured praises on the International Community including election observers from ECOWAS, AU, EU, and others international observers and monitors, and prayed that these elections will bring a new breed of leaders who will make the difference. Cameroon: At least 13 dead in landslide after torrential rain

Liberians Concerned About Fairness of October 10 Polls
Among the key findings: 30.5% of respondents expressed that they were "not very confident" in the fairness and transparency of the elections. About 10.2% also claimed to be "not confident at all," and 19.8% were only "Somewhat confident," the survey finds. "The survey findings reveal that opinions on this matter are diverse among the Liberian population," GeoPoll says.
