If base rate goes up from its current 5.25 per cent, you’ll get the whole rise within two weeks of the change. Savers with money in an easy-access account earn just 2 per cent interest on average, new figures from the Bank of England tell us. With accounts paying up to 8 per cent, you will earn much more than if you put the money into an easy-access account. Open to everyone is Gatehouse Bank’s new online account at 7 per cent, while West Bromwich BS’s account pays 6 per cent, in branches only.

We are together – Erik ten Hag confident he retains backing of Man Utd playersBy Simon Peach, PA Chief Football WriterUnder-fire Erik ten Hag is convinced he retains the backing of Manchester United’s players after the club were angered by reports he had lost some of the dressing room. Asked if he believed he still had the requisite buy-in from his players to be successful, Ten Hag said: “Oh yes, I’m sure. Anthony Gordon scored Newcastle’s winner against Manchester United on Saturday. “Of course there are always in every team players who are less playing, who are less happy, but not different as normal. “Do you think that you can make a goal like we did against Everton if the players didn’t embrace it?

Ukraine and Russia launched more drone strikes against each other’s cities as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy prepared to appeal directly to US senators for more aid and the White House warned that continued deadlock over funding would allow the Kremlin’s invasion to succeed. Ukrainian officials said 10 of the explosive-laden drones were shot down, but three of them damaged an unspecified infrastructure facility in the western Lviv region. Drones also hit the northeastern Kharkiv region and Donetsk and Kherson in the east and southeast. US president Joe Biden’s administration has warned that approved funding for Ukraine will run out by the end of this month, potentially cutting arms supplies to Kyiv, “kneecapping” its troops on the battlefield and jeopardising its economic stability. “The resources Congress has provided for Ukraine and other national security needs have halted Russia’s advances in Ukraine; helped Ukraine achieve significant military victories, including taking back more than 50 per cent of the territory that Russia had previously occupied,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Road tolls to increase for second time in under a year from JanuaryMichael BoltonIrish motorists are set to be hit with another toll increase, with costs climbing by at least 20 cent in January. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) approved these increases in tolls for 2024, in October 2023. For M50 and PPP toll roads most car tolls are increasing by 20 cent per journey and heavy good vehicles tolls by 30 to 50 cent per journey. In 2023, the expected tolling income of approximately €208 million will make up about 45 per cent of the overall Protection & Renewal budget for the national roads programme. TII said they will use the expected increase in income in 2024 to continue to fund the Protection and Renewal activities where significant increases in costs are being experienced due to inflation.
