Manchester United battle to goalless draw at Anfield as Liverpool bluntedBy Carl Markham, PALiverpool’s failure to score for the first time since April cost them top spot in the Premier League as Manchester United secured a goalless draw to deny their arch-rivals a club record. The pressure United were being put under was typified by Antony passing the ball out of play as intended target Dalot ran past him. Onana failed to hold a Luke Shaw half-clearance and Salah’s shot was deflected wide but did much better in tipping over Virgil van Dijk’s header. It brought immediate change with Alexander-Arnold’s low drive just wide and Onana palming away a Salah effort and charging down a Luis Diaz shot. United swapped Garnacho for Marcus Rashford while Klopp switched again, this time to a 4-2-3-1 with the attacking talents of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott deployed.

Russian president Vladimir Putin visits the exhibition of achievements 'Russia' prior to the United Russia party congress in Moscow, on Sunday. Photograph: Sergey Fadeichev/Pool/AFP via GettyRussian president Vladimir Putin dismissed as complete nonsense remarks by US president Joe Biden that Russia would attack a Nato country if it won the war in Ukraine, adding that Russia had no interest in fighting the military alliance. READ MORE“Russia has no reason, no interest – no geopolitical interest, neither economic, political nor military – to fight with Nato countries,” Mr Putin said. Mr Putin has repeatedly cast the post-Cold War expansion of Nato as evidence of the West’s arrogant way of dealing with Russia’s security concerns. “The reality is that after the fall of the Soviet Union, they considered that they just had to wait for a bit to completely destroy Russia,” Mr Putin said.

There seems to have been direct interlocution between political head PM Indira Gandhi and the Army Chief General Manekshaw on all military matters at the time of 1971 war. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi gave him a cold stare. Subsequently, on many occasions, Indira Gandhi used to give him direct calls to discuss various important issues. There was no intermediary like Defence Minister or Defence Secretary in between. When post 1971 war, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi offered the post of Ambassador to Field Marshal Manekshaw post retirement as army chief, he refused point-blank.

Ireland limited their hosts to 197 off 40 overs on Sunday (Monday AEDT) thanks to good bowling from Curtis Campher and Graham Hume in Harare before Balbirnie guided his team to victory as they chased down their adjusted target of 201 with 13 balls to spare. Ireland started brightly when Hume dismissed Tinashe Kamunhukamwe in the second over and Zimbabwe struggled to find any rhythm as Takudzwanashe Kaitano was run out before Campher trapped Innocent Kaia lbw. Gumbie finished with a top score of 72 before being run out and Wellington Masakadza's entertaining 24 off 19 helped Zimbabwe add more runs in the final overs, but Campher and Hume took four wickets each to dismiss the hosts. Blessing Muzarabani struck straight away as Ireland captain Paul Stirling fell for eight, but Balbirnie and Campher smashed 70 off 84 balls to pile on the pressure before the latter fell for 40. Harry Tector added a valuable 33 before Luke Jongwe took his wicket, but Lorcan Tucker put on 29 alongside Balbirnie, hitting back-to-back boundaries to clinch victory as Ireland finished on 3-204.

Jewellery is particularly popular at this time of year, especially if it is made from precious metals such as gold and silver. Hochschild Mining is one of the world's oldest metal groups, tracing its roots back to 1920s Bolivia. But Hochschild shares, having topped £3 in 2017, are now £1, hit by tricky markets, the pandemic and enduring political turbulence. (Silver production is far greater than gold, but mining firms convert it to give investors a better picture). At £1, Hochschild shares are a buy.

The US Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee duly made no change to interest rates, as did the Bank of England, the European Central Bank and the Swiss National Bank the next day. But what did change – the Fed's projections for its interest rates next year – has galvanised the markets, and that has profound implications for all of us. Cautious: Fed chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged that rate cuts could begin before inflation got down to 2 per centThe Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, was cautious, as central bankers must be. Remember all that stuff about the Chancellor having more 'headroom' for tax cuts in the Autumn Statement? The S&P 500 closed at 4,719 on Friday and the ten-year yield was 3.9 per cent.

Western-made components are still ‘finding their way’ to RussiaIrish goods are making their way into Russia via countries where there is a “risk of circumvention” of sanctions. Countries that previously had very little trade with Ireland before the Russian invasion of Ukraine have reported significant increases so far this year. Exports to Kyrgyzstan this year were over €4.5m – almost 5,000pc ahead of trade in 2021, before the war. Following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU launched sanctions against Russia, targeting key sectors. In a resolution last month, the European Parliament voiced its alarm over loopholes in the EU sanctions regime against Russia.
