Irish exports to countries in the Russian orbit soar by as much as 5,000pc


Western-made components are still ‘finding their way’ to RussiaIrish goods are making their way into Russia via countries where there is a “risk of circumvention” of sanctions. Countries that previously had very little trade with Ireland before the Russian invasion of Ukraine have reported significant increases so far this year. Exports to Kyrgyzstan this year were over €4.5m – almost 5,000pc ahead of trade in 2021, before the war. Following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU launched sanctions against Russia, targeting key sectors. In a resolution last month, the European Parliament voiced its alarm over loopholes in the EU sanctions regime against Russia.
