The husband of a 28-year-old woman who died just four hours after delivering her baby at Mayo University Hospital has settled for €1.9 million High Court actions over her death. The couple had planned to have more children and buy a home in Ireland—their mortgage offer came in two days after Ms Tariq’s death. The inquest heard Ms Tariq died after a heart attack following post-partum haemorrhage, retained placenta, bleeding arising from ectopic deciduosis, and shock. Despite extensive emergency resuscitative efforts just four hours after delivering her baby daughter, Ms Tariq died. The review into Ms Tariq’s death found her skin pallor was “initially less obvious” due to her ethnicity.

‘Significant amount of cocaine’ found on ship in Limerick port20,000 tonne vessel arrived at Foynes at around 10.30am Tuesday morningCocaine worth €21m discovered on cargo ship in Limerick ‘set to be picked up by another vessel’Gardaí suspect that a €21 million haul of cocaine, found on a cargo ship at Foynes Port in Co Limerick, was a shipment organised by a network of criminal gangs rather than one single criminal entity. Around 300kg of cocaine, which would be worth even more on the street, was seized by Revenue customs services officials, on board the Verila, a Maltese bulk cargo vessel registered in Valletta, Malta. The 20848 tonne ship left Montreal, Canada, on December 9, arriving at Foynes on Tuesday, according to the marine traffic monitoring system. The bulk carrier that was also carrying a legitimate cargo of grain remained in the custody of Revenue customs services officials and gardaí today. It is the second large cocaine seizure in the State in a few months.

Stormy Thursday: Met Éireann issues warning over strong windsMet Éireann has issued a 20-hour weather warning for strong winds throughout Ireland tomorrow (Thursday). The yellow-level warning comes into effect at midnight tonight and will remain in place until 8pm on Thursday night. The forecasting service said northwest winds would be "very strong at times" and there was potential for debris and loose objects to be displaced, along with difficult conditions for motorists and cyclists. High waves and wave overtopping are expected in coastal parts of the country. On a positive note temperatures will remain mild, for this time of year, in the lead up to Christmas, with a 'White Christmas' looking unlikely.

A new Covid-19 variant of interest which could lead to a rise in infections this winter has been detected in Ireland. The World Health Organisation said today it is classifying JN.1 a variant of interest. "Despite this, with the onset of winter in the northern hemisphere, JN.1 could increase the burden of respiratory infections in many countries." It said that due to its rapidly increasing spread, WHO is classifying the variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOI) from the parent lineage BA.2.86. WHO advises people to take measures to prevent infections and severe disease using all available tools.

20 Dec 2023| 06:09am ISTEntire Sunburn area asked to be ‘preferably’ a no-smoking zone28 conditions include submission of a list of all Visa types of performing artistesTeam HeraldPANJIM: Among the 28 conditions laid down by the Tourism Department for the organiser of the Sunburn EDM festival, there’s an interesting clause where the entire Sunburn area is asked to be “preferably” a no smoking zone. With the word ‘preferably’ in place, it is unlikely that this clause will be even looked at. Among the conditions are that the entire festival area should be preferably a no-smoking zone, approach the traffic cell for effective traffic management and parking for the entire area and communicate the same to the department. The organisers will have to submit a Disaster Management Plan and drawings of stages and structure stability report. The volunteers be provided ID cards, and reflective jackets for crowd management, parking management etc and their credentials/background be verified from the security point of view.
