‘Significant amount of cocaine’ found on ship in Limerick port20,000 tonne vessel arrived at Foynes at around 10.30am Tuesday morningCocaine worth €21m discovered on cargo ship in Limerick ‘set to be picked up by another vessel’Gardaí suspect that a €21 million haul of cocaine, found on a cargo ship at Foynes Port in Co Limerick, was a shipment organised by a network of criminal gangs rather than one single criminal entity. Around 300kg of cocaine, which would be worth even more on the street, was seized by Revenue customs services officials, on board the Verila, a Maltese bulk cargo vessel registered in Valletta, Malta. The 20848 tonne ship left Montreal, Canada, on December 9, arriving at Foynes on Tuesday, according to the marine traffic monitoring system. The bulk carrier that was also carrying a legitimate cargo of grain remained in the custody of Revenue customs services officials and gardaí today. It is the second large cocaine seizure in the State in a few months.
